It's happened-I've turned into a comic book nerd. I was one when a child and now I've gotten sucked back into that abyss..and I like it.

This book was pure awesomeness.
Dave is just that nerdy kid. He reads comic books and hangs out with his friends when not fantasizing about his biology teacher. His mom has recently passed away and his dad works long hours at night. Dave realizes it doesn't take trauma to make you a super hero: just loneliness and despair. So he suits up.

Dave does not have an easy time with the whole superhero thing. He gets the crap beat out of him. A whole lot. Poor kid.

He tries to hang up the crime fighting hat but then along comes a guy dressed up like a superhero named "Red Mist", that kinda pisses off our Kick-Ass hero so he dons the suit again and they team up.

Now this book is violent as shit. You have a 10 year old girl who cusses more than I do.

However, this book is one of my favorite comics that I have read so far. *whispers read this*

Okay, I guess. Found it more enjoyable than I would like to admit. But how the hell can Dave take all of these beatings? If I was his dad I would lock him in a room and throw away the key because the bills must be insane. How do you explain to a doctor that some muggers fried your testicles anyway?

Edit: retroactive 2 stars, this series never grows or becomes better.

I have seen both the graphic novel and the ads for the movie version of this comic for years, but it wasn't until my son asked me to read it that I tried it for myself. I found it an interesting commentary on the role superheroes play in our culture and our lives. We may long to have powers or special abilities and to do heroic things, but in reality superpowers don't exist, training is difficult, and people without either who try to pick fights with criminals are likely to get themselves hurt. That Mark Millar uses the real-world consequences to explore what would happen when someone attempted to do so makes for an entertaining story — and, thanks to John Romita's art, a bloody one to boot.

Quite different from the movie, although I wouldn't say it's better (I kinda liked the movie). The Romita art is amazing, vibrant and messed up. Calling it Frank Miller-esque wouldn't be fair, FM was never this good of an artist. The story is well told, and the book is meaty enough to keep you reading for more than a few minutes. Overall a good TPB, but I don't know about it's re-reading value. We'll see.

Disappointed in the pacing and the art style isn’t my cup of tea.

This comic (and the movie) has pissed off a lot of people.. and that's why I love it so much. Wish the film had included them breaking up because for some reason I thought that was the most hilarious part.

I decided to reread Kick-Ass before reading Kick-Ass 2, and what can I say? Still as awesome as ever. Super violent, offensive, and hilarious!

I really need to read more by Mark Millar.
