I don't usually read romance or suspense, both genres I have been trying to read more of recently. And to be honest, I was more the pleasantly surprised by how much I liked this. The combination of the two genres worked really well, and the chemistry between Paige and Grayson added a slightly happier element to the darkness of everything going on around them, and as they fall in love it really does feel like the risks - for both of them - become greater.

There are a lot of characters in this book, something which usually annoys me but the style and pacing keeps them all clear and separate, and they all stand out in their own right; even those that only get a small amount of space become fully fleshed and easily identifiable. It's a fairly long book but there weren't any parts where it felt like it got bogged down - the change in scenes works well, and we get the viewpoints of a variety of characters throughout the course of the novel's events, drumming up even more mystery as we try to work out who each one is.

Thoroughly enjoyed this, and will be checking out more of Karen Rose's novels.

PI and State Attorney investigate a wrongful conviction and murders in the past and present. As usual, KR weaved a immersive, interesting suspense plot with lots of players and super bad guys. The leads are great  - they're both brave and determined, and I especially loved him, his protectiveness and his core of integrity.

Their connection is admittedly instant but intense (KR's trend but I'm not mad about it), but given the circumstances, their romance works and is believable. Loved the sexual tension, and the moment when they finally give in. The trust and respect they have for each other really drives their chemistry. Would've loved an epilogue into their future, however!

I enjoyed this book. It was nothing like the last Karen Rose book I read, and there were a bunch of characters I felt like had been developed elsewhere. But I was still able to follow along. I'd definitely read another one.

This was one of the better books in this series - both Paige and Greyson were smart and brave. They made a lot of sense together! The mystery was pretty elaborate and dark as per usual.

Paige Holden is now a PI in training, partnering with Clay Maynard after her move from Minneapolis to Baltimore. When her pro bono client almost crashes into her, Paige runs to her bullet-riddled car and hears her dying words before a sniper's bullet finishes her off. Unfortunately, it's all captured on video and when Assistant State Attorney Grayson Smith sees Paige in action, he's inexplicably drawn to her. Maybe it's karma as Paige's client was the wife of the man Grayson put behind bars. Now it seems that he may have imprisoned an innocent man.

The action starts within the first few pages and never lets up. It doesn't take very long to get that this is a complicated case with many tentacles. Grayson and Paige are paired rather quickly and when they become targets, that situation becomes rather permanent. Her investigative skills made the story even more interesting and Grayson was no slouch himself. And, Paige's pet Rottweiler, named Peabody, was a wonderful addition to the mix.

Both Grayson and Paige's backstories were heartbreaking and chilling. I wish, however, that we'd experienced Paige's, which occurred sometime between this book and the last. It was revealed in increments but I would have preferred to read it in real time.

There's a steep body count in this book and after awhile, I became numb to it all. This conspiracy was a thorny one with money, politics and cops threaded throughout. It was tough to figure out who to trust and motives but it did start to come together. I enjoyed it despite the bloodiness of it all and Grayson and Paige were wonderfully crafted characters. This continues to be one of my favorite series that manages to interweave past characters into the present in seriously meaningful ways.
