I honestly don't understand the hate this book gets! I loved it! I loved watching the relationship between Chaol and Yrene grow. I was hoping to see more of Yrene after reading Assassin's Blade! I so enjoyed reading about the southern continent and the Khagan! I'm definitely glad Sartaq and Nesryn ended up together! They are one of my favorite couples! Their journey and the plot with the Ruks was very good! And the information revealed about the spiders and their escape was also well done!! I didn't expect what they discovered on their journey. Maeve, a valg queen, posing as a fae queen??? Whoa!! I didn't see that coming! I wasn't sure fully if Maeve was a villain or not, but after reading this book, I'm certain, and I despise her! Ughh!!! I wasn't sure about Hasar either, but by the end of the book, I grew to love her and she became another favorite character in this! She might have a hard edge, but I believe she cared about Yrene deep down all along. This was such a fantastic read!!!! Loved it! Very underhyped imho!

This story was nothing like I expected and it gave us so much information, as well as introducing us to some new (and old) faces. Again–I cannot recommend the tandem read enough, the way the information layers between books and helps you form a more full picture is a reader is absolutely crazy in the best way.

Wow I loved getting to know the characters in this book! The world building that the tandem read allows for is amazing and I truly feel like I can picture the upcoming battles on the map. I am so excited to round out this series and beyond happy that the characters in this book are joining the main storyline once again.

An almost relaxing turn in the midst of this series, but still maintaining the mystery and global stakes. The book feels generally hopeful and introduces a new part of the world well, and is only let down by the characters’ very occasional childish behaviour.

Yrene is a very engaging character, and Chaol and Nesryn both grow to find their places in the series. Very interesting revelations and the setting contrasts very well with the northern continent.

Chaol and Nestryn’s journey to the southern kingdom had two goals: rally the troops and restore Chaol.

They accomplished both
