Such mixed feelings!

Really easy to read and a clever twist on the fake boyfriend trope but WOW what an unlikeable heroine. Hard to root for a happy ending when she’s made such awful choices along the way.

Another DNF - I got 70 pages in and found the main protagonist, Eliza, such a complete soggy garbage bag of a human that I had to stop. When she is pulling Blake, who seems like a nice person, into his bedroom and thinking "My plan is working"
Spoiler(AKA her plan to get a boyfriend/fiancé to cover up the fact that she "accidentally" posted her single self wearing an engagement ring and now her jewelry business is taking off and she's an "influencer" who is getting offered free wedding venues, dresses, etc)
Spoiler, you know that she is a gaping hole of worthlessness. Save yourself the time and rage and find a book that had characters worthy of attention.

This book was the equivalent to a Netflix produced rom-com that features all the modern-day technology that we all love to hate and hate to love.

Eliza Roth is a badass lady business owner who owns her own jewelry shop with her sister. She is an Instagram whiz and knows how to use social media to benefit her business. One night, she accidentally posts a fake engagement announcement onto her Instagram page (that has more than 100K followers) but business spikes after and she decides that she will pretend to be engaged to help boost sales so that their business can afford the increasing rent. What follows is a series of bad decisions that she makes as she tries to find a groom to fully execute her fake wedding (where she inevitably ends up falling in love for real).

I liked the NYC setting in this one, found the writing to be pretty good, and was sucked in by the story (even if it was a little eye-rolly at times). Recommend for a fun and quick read!

Oh social media, how we love thee and loathe thee all at the same time.
It's all swipes and likes until someone accidentally posts a fake engagement!

I LOVED Playing with Matches, so I immediately knew I needed this book! Hanna Orenstein has a way of making me fully escape reality and get compulsively sucked into her books! The stories she writes are fresh, and funny, and full of wit and charm. ALTHOUGH, Eliza frustrated me to no end in this story with her ridiculous shenanigans, I charged through this story like a social media director on Follow Friday.... and found it to be a fun summer read for sure!

When Eliza accidentally posts a ring selfie on Instagram... a ring on THAT finger... to her jewelry stores 100K followers, there's just a tiny bit of a problem. She doesn't even have a boyfriend. Whoopsie.

But the likes start pouring in and sales at the store are booming, and the money issues and worries her and her sister have of potentially losing the shop, just might be over. So, Eliza does what any sane human would do.... keep up the ruse, plan a wedding, and find a fake fiance. Easy enough right?!?

With a silly and fun story line of love, ambition and family, this modern rom-com quenched my thirst for an absurdly charming character in Eliza and her ridiculous idea that just might save her shop - all while faking what could be the most romantic love story of her life.

I laughed, I yelled, I giggled. It was so much fun to read.

I really wanted to like this book as I love these new looks on social media and relationships. But I did not like the main character so it was a hard read, I did finish it but I just wasn’t that invested in the outcome. A real shame.

Have you ever told a small lie and had it spiral into needing bigger and bigger lies to protect the first one? Or have you ever accidentally posted something you never meant to share publicly or hit reply all when you meant to only send to one person?

This is how it all starts for Eliza in Love at First Like. After seeing her ex is engaged, she tries on a diamond ring from her jewelry store and makes a fake Instagram post to save to her drafts folder. Only without realizing it - she sends it out to her 100,000 followers. Store business spikes before she can take it down - and suddenly she realizes she may need to keep this going. Only she’s going to need to find a man to be her new fiancĂ© stat!

What I loved about this book:
- I really enjoyed the overall vibe that felt a lot like classic romcom movies starring Kate Hudson or Sandra Bullock.
- It was fun for me that she works in a fine jewelry store in Brooklyn. I work in fine jewelry - and loved relating to that as well as all the nyc spots I recognized.
- I loved Eliza’s friends - they were supportive and awesome and also told her when they felt she was making mistakes - but ultimately always had her back.
- The ending - no spoilers so I’ll leave it at that

What I didn’t love about this book:
- In a word, Eliza. I found Eliza’s choices so frustrating. I spent a lot of the book having that feeling you get in a horror movie where you’re yelling “don’t go upstairs, go out the door!!! Run away!!” I hate when a character chooses to keep unnecessary secrets.

Thank you very much to Netgalley and the publisher for the chance to read an advance reading copy in exchange for my honest review.
