Not nearly weird enough! I wanted dolls and body horror and powerful women and was met with incessant heteronormativity and frankly boring stories, terribly disappointing.

Weird, grimy, and highly literary. Some of my favorite things. Grudova's prose took me on a dark journey into places where sewing machines are dangerous and literally anything can happen to the characters I'm reading. At their best these stories spin their own worlds into graceful punctuations of lost humanity. This was a very impressive collection of work.

Thnx Pien voor het aanbevelen van deze fever-dream-uit-de-hel van een boek! 😂

Grudova utilizes repetition to paint a portrait of a grotesque parallel world. Sewing machines, dolls, pregnancy, women's labor juxtaposed by men's academia, tins of food, stickiness... Each story makes a statement about direct and passive violence within an extreme patriarchy.

Ultimately, these stories were often too immersive! I left The Doll's Alphabet feeling like I'd narrowly escaped the oppressive and claustrophobic circumstances of Grudova's world.
