This book has a nifty conceit: split up the two main characters from Book 1 and tell the story from each of their perspectives. But it fails to capture quite the same emotional heart as Book 1, and the ending is merely a cliffhanger for the finale. A perfectly serviceable midpoint to the trilogy, but not quite as good as the first part.

I didn‘t remember much of what happened in this book. It‘s heartbreaking. It‘s terrible to see where everything is headed and my heart broke so many times for Todd and Viola. It‘s written well to show how tyrants act and what despair and terror will do to people.

"To live is to fight"

(claramente no sobrevivo lol).

"We are the choices we make. And have to make. We aren't anything else."

an entirely different beast than the last

This sequel takes on a completely different atmosphere than the first installment had, putting the characters into even tougher situations than before--thing is, most of the time it felt like the characters were dolls meant to move the story in a certain direction than actual humans. The two main viewpoints are kids who just had their whole world blown apart not too long ago, but you'd hardly notice besides it being mentioned a few pages. This could have been on purpose, but it's not done in a very convincing way. This shows, I think, how little thought is put into what the character would do as opposed to what the author wants them to do.
While I personally didn't enjoy it as much as I'd have liked to, I would recommend the sequel if you're more interested in thought-reading warfare than inspection of the human mind.

this book, ohhh this book.

damn you patrick ness.

i’ve never been more frustrated, more sad, more angry, more everything, with a book. jesus christ.

it’s amazing how i thought it wasn’t going to top the knife of never letting go but boy how wrong i was.

this book was so raw and hard. i mean, we get todd and all his suffering (i just wanted to hug him and rock him and tell him he’s okay, viola’s okay), we get people fighting with their own humanity, wondering if what they’re doing is good or bad, wether they’re still the person they always thought they were. it’s amazing how you can feel all of their feelings through the pages.

todd has my heart. my poor todd. he grew so much, so fast, and it was so much. i thought he was gonna break at points but no, he’s so so strong, my dearest boy.

viola is amazing, i love how strong she is, how determined. she’s willing to do everything for todd and ugh, i love her.

the mayor. this effing dude. him as a villain was AMAZING, such a good character. i hate his guts but that’s the whole point. i liked (not really but yk) how he could manipulate everyone, making them wonder what the truth was. he’s so creepy, and scary, and i really hope he dies.

i loves the different perspectives in the book, how you could find the differences so easily between todd and viola. davy prentiss!! a character i didn’t think i was going to care so much.

i loved this book. so much. made me feel alllll the feels.
