Enjoyed this one, keeps you interested the whole way through but the constant anxiety of doom & hopelessness in these books is too stressful for me i need a happy resolution

... this picked up right where the first book left off, yet still new characters and POV being added. I probably should have stopped after book 1, the whole situation here is just too depressing. I didn't care for the whole "darkness" coming after all the kids. I figured I'd finish it, but it felt like it would never end, just dragged on and on ...

Absolutely amazing. This series is for the Hunger Games fanatic who wants a new series to work on (*cough* me) but the story is quite possibly more horrific and disturbing then the concept of the Hunger Games; instead of adults running a corrupt society and forcing kids to kill each other, it is kids falling into a corrupt society created by themselves, torturing each other because of human nature. It is a Hunger Games meets Stephan King books meets Lord of the Flies, and it is awesome!

I have to admit I didn’t enjoy it as much as the first one but I still absolutely loved this book and continue to love this series! I do have to put a huge disclaimer that this series is extremely dark and to be read with caution due to the themes.

Where do I start with this book?
Hunger took off with a bang, Michael Grant wasted no time in getting straight into the action. This sequel is set about 3 months after Gone ended and the kids are scared, hungry and divided between the "normals" and "freaks"
A lot of the characters changed and found themselves in places they didn't think they'd be at. Sam especially who feels like the world is on his shoulders since he has a truck load of issues to deal with in the FAYZ.
It's scary to read this book and try to imagine kids in very adult situations. For example, some are alcoholics, smoke pot, threaten to kill kids in cold blood, I just shudder thinking that these kids are as young as 12. Maybe that's what makes this book so intriguing, Michael Grant took all my "what about" questions and answered them in full detail. This books was all about hunger and "what about when food starts to run out?" here the kids get desperate, terrified and some of the normal kids start to turn on those with powers.
This book has quite a lot of characters but I didn't find it hard to keep up, although I found it frustrating when something big was about to someone and we switch to another character and just when I was getting engrossed in that characters story, we switch to someone else. But I still loved this book and just had to keep reading.
As well as having our regulars such as Sam, Astrid, Edilio (my fave), Lana ect we're also introduced to new people who were struggling just as much as everyone else, some of which take bad to a whole new level. I now have a new found love for Dekka who gets a bigger role and Duck, a newbie.

5 starts because this book was jammed packed full of action. It made me cringe, laugh, gasp, shudder, protest, cry (almost) and want more!

Initial Thoughts

Going into this book it seemed like it was going to be a pretty typical dystopia. I had an idea of what was going to happen and I was mostly right. The book is called Hunger, what do you think is going to happen? They're going to run out of food. Pretty boring right? Well that's what I thought too.

My New Best Friend

I do think I'd like a best friend from this book. I didn't find the characters as interesting in this book as the first. Astrid got boring, Sam was a baby, and even the Breeze was annoying. I did like Edilio though. He was always entertaining. He seems like he's way older. He doesn't have any special powers but he doesn't care. He's just trying to survive the best he can.

My Crush

Definitely no crush in this book. I liked Edilio but he wouldn't be a character I'd fall in love with. None of them are. I think it might be because they're younger characters and their age really shows.

Writing Style

His writing was technically really good. I just found that it was lacking something. I didn't see very much character development and the plot was really predictable. Not the greatest. I will still be moving on with the series though because the first book was really good.

Closing Thoughts

I was a little upset because this book had a lot of good reviews. I just found that it wasn't up to the same standard as the first one. It was really predictable and the characters got really annoying. Sam worked too hard and then complained about it. Astrid just kept keeping secrets from everyone. Drake was completely insane and it scared me a little bit. The Darkness was a weird villain. We don't really know anything about it except that it wants to eat everything. It was a typical book where the whole time the characters are just trying to stop the villain. The side plots weren't exciting at all. Also a bunch of characters "die" at the end only to be fixed up. He can't even kill of the characters. The only good thing about this book was that they all teamed up in the end. It just wasn't a good sequel for me. I was really disappointed.

Bonus

No bonus because it was too disappointing.
