The novel misleads the reader several times, it seems unsure of the story it’s telling, but that’s only because the book is aiming at the frustrations lying in the storytelling and its main character and narrator. It’s ultimately a book about aging and slowly losing the whole world that surrounds you and that once gave meaning to your life.

This is my second novel from Machado de Assis and I didn't enjoy it as much as I did Bras Cubas. The introduction claims that the narrator is an obsessive recluse that let his jealousy destroy his marriage. But 90% of the book follows him as a young man trying to find his way, both romantically and career-wise. It's very slow and very repetitive. The last 10% of the novel is a wild ride and definitely the best part. Even though I was bored for much of the story, I still love the authorial voice; it's absolutely phenomenal. I would love to read the rest of his oeuvre and hope to tackle his short stories next.

Such a hard book to describe in a quick review. It's a middle-aged man remembering the great love of his life, his jealousy, and possible betrayal. The tone is magnificent and even harder to explain than the plot.
