The audio as a little difficult to follow on this one. That aside, I truly enjoyed this change of pace.
The authors note at the end was most surprising to me, as that's when you learn that much of the main story is based on fact.
I was impressed by the writing. I was very glad to see that even though the characters were of color, I didn't feel like I was listening to a dialect I couldn't understand. The reader of this did a fantastic job making me connect with the characters.
The only improvement on the audio would have been two different voices for the two primary character points of view.
Great book for teens of any age, and especially those that want to learn more about the world outside of their own four walls.

This was wonderful. I absolutely cannot wait for #2 in the series to come out, the character development and atmosphere were so well developed I felt as though I was holding my breath the entire book.

It took me quite some time to actually finish this which obviously means that it wasn't a favorite of mine. To its merit, this novel is action-packed, has a very interesting setting, and deals well with difficult subject matters such as war, grief, pain... it also is a great representation of strong but well-rounded black girls and how they were shaped by the horrors of war.
The major cons here is that it is catering to an audience and it wasn't for me, the whole mechs aspect of it is not really sth I liked, the fight scenes were great though simply not so much that it got me hyped about giant robots battling with giant swords and lasers. I was way more interested in the abd arc and the way they dealt with synthetic humans as weapons, that part was fantastic, and would've loved it to last a bit longer.
At the end of the day, the book is good and although I do not plan on reading the sequel (mostly because to me the end was actually a great conclusion and although it leaves room for the story to go, I just feel like the end of this book is what I want to leave the story with), this novel just didn't leave me hungry for more mostly because it's not really my taste. I also want to quickly note that I wasn't deeply invested with the characters, I love their story and how they develop but I didn't click with anyone in particular and therefore the loss of some secondary characters just left me indifferent most of the time.
If you like sci-fi/mecha and want a somewhat dark story, I would recommend it because it has a nice story offer without it being the best thing out there.

A futuristic re-telling of a horrific time in Nigeria’s history. This novel touched me, deeply.

I just have no idea what's going on.  I can't focus on the audiobook enough.  I think I'll have to read this one as a physical copy.

Okay so I REALLY wanted to like this, I enjoyed the writing and a lot of the commentary but I STRUGGLED fallowing along and feeling connected with the characters. Sci-fi is a real hit or miss genre for me so take my rating with a grain of salt.
