This volume covers chapters 1 to 4.
This volume acts as a perfect introduction to the various characters.

The arrogant king, the insightful general, the aloof queen, the kind and sensitive prince.
In just the first chapter, we can understand the entire culture of Ecbatana, down to the thinking of the common man.

And the artwork is so beautiful. It is a visual treat to just stare at the characters and the scenery.

Arslan is the 14-year-old crown Prince of Pars. The son of a powerful and merciless ruler, King Andragoras, great things are expected of him.

But, in the midst of his first battle, Arslan suffers a bloody and brutal defeat at the hands of mysterious and ruthless forces.

The capital of Pars is seized and the country thrown into turmoil. Arslan is barely able to escape with his life. It is only with the aid of his trusted protector, Daryun, that Arslan is able to make it out alive.

With only a few close Allie’s and his wits, Arslan must find a way to reclaim his thrown and save the people of his country from a hopeless fate.

This is an action-packed start to a series that promises an expansive world full of compelling characters and political intrigue! Definitely looking forward to reading this one! I remember watching the anime a few years back and being totally captivated!

Apparently this manga was inspired by a series of novels, which were inspired by a Persian legend. The art style is recognizably Hiromu Arakawa from Fullmetal Alchemist.

A few years later, after meeting a slave, Prince Arslan of Pars faces his first battle after war broke out again between Pars and his county's enemy, Lusitania. Though a back stabbing leads to Pars defeat and Prince Arslan fleeing with his bodyguard and friend. That's the end of vol. 1

The art and character designs are beautiful, but I've read the volume 3 times and haven't a interest of picking up vol. 2. Good story from some, but not my cup of tea at this time.

Did you say Exiled Prince on a Quest to Reclaim his Kingdom??? Sign me the heck up!!!

My only complaint is that the English translation is subpar, with some awkward phrasing and the occasional outright grammatical error.

**I watched part of the anime, but never finished and I wanted to read the manga before I gave it a retry. I liked it, but it was still airing at the time. I don't know if they ever finished making the anime or if the manga was even up to date.**

Characters 3

A lot of first volumes of manga are just introducing characters and threads of a plot, but I do see some interesting aspects with Arslan and Daryun.

Setting 4
The Manga is giving us a clear picture if their world and how their economy works. We know some people have slaves and another country is a big religious country. I'm excited to learn more about the world.

Plot 3
We have threads of a plot of a war and the man in the mask but, nothing substanial yet.

Art 3

I like Arakawa, but their art doesn't astound me.

Dialogue/Writing 3

We are going to interesting places with the dialogue and it's very informative and we get to know what warriors and warlords are called in this world. I know this an adaptation of Yoshiki Tanaka's novel and I wish I could have read the novel first(it's not translated into English. I will forever be upset until it is translated).

Enjoyability 4

I had a lot of fun reading this and it pretty fast paced!

This is an interesting, very loosely based historical fiction manga with better-than-solid art by Hiromi Arakawa, who many many recognize as the creator of Full Metal Alchemist. The line work is a little loose for my taste, but I like it, as well as the incorporation of textile patterns and jewelry to make this title feel like it's taking place in 60 BCE Era Persia. Arakawa's sense for action layouts, landscapes and facial expressions also helps to give the story emotional clout and character development to balance a story dominated by political and military machinations.
