Runaways is such an insanely fun concept but after 9 volumes, some of the charm is wearing off for me. The lack of a single driving arc, new characters popping up frequently and a decline in art quality has left me feeling a little underwhelmed. Needs more Vaughan! Everything needs more Vaughan.

It ticks me off when a good series suddenly changes things up. Sadly this volume not only changes up the art style, but it takes all the character development and stomps on it, and basically flips readers the bird. Chase is basically back to being an idiot jock. Even more brainless then when he first came into the series, and really mouthy. Talk about slapping Gert fans in the face.

Overall the plot bored me. The resolution was sad and broke up the best thing about Runaways. Who knows if it will be revisited.

Now about the art style. Don't get me wrong it's nice and I've enjoyed other comics and things that use it. However, with the change many characters no longer look like themselves and the style is juvenile. Yes, I get this is a comic about juveniles. But that doesn't mean everything suddenly has to be child out. Runaways best feature was that despite it being about kids it brings in adult themes about right and wrong, death, and more. The old art style reflected that. It was beautiful and brought a gritty realism to the comics.

The art style isn't my only gripe. The story was jumpy and didn't flow well in many spots. The art style is so jumbled up that some of the fighting scenes--heck even none fighting--seemed garbled and hard to follow. This is series 3/vol 3 and at this point I'll only be following just to see how things wrap up. To be honest if I would have known the series spiraled out this bad I probably would have never continued.

I fear for further entries to this once brilliant series.

The Runaways were my first foray into graphic novels and I have enjoyed everyone from vol. 1 to vol. 8. Brian K. Vaughn did a great job with the first 7 and Joss Whedon...well it is Joss do I need to say more. However, there was something just off with vol. 9. Terry Moore just seemed to be one step off with the characters. No one seemed right. Even the illustrations seemed off. I was sadly disappointed.

I like the story in this one but found the art style very distracting. I felt like everyone had HUGE teeth and they were SHOUTING all the time. Maybe it was just the cartoon-y style but it got old very fast.

I accidentally read this one before the previous volume, so I was a bit confused about to certain events and joins/removals from the team, until I checked the issues on the back covers of the two volumes I have and discovered my mistake. All the same, a nice collection. The art was a bit more sporadic than the previous one, and the plot a bit more wonky, but still very good!

The art is a little weird - kind of
manga/deformo in places - but the story is solid. I'm curious where they're going with the dj guy...

The saddest volume of Runaways. Why did Xavin have to do that? It's been years since I first read this and I still cry like a baby over Xavin's sacrifice. If I could have one consolidation from the new run of comics for Runaways it would be that Xavin somehow comes back to right wrongs and fix her marriage to Karolina.
