This review is from my very fond memory of reading this series in sixth grade. I cannot believe my mom never thought to ask me what the books were about. Re-reading these books now would only tarnish the memory of how much my twelve year old self loved them!

The first time I read this book, I was a young teenager. This time, I listened to the Audiobook version on Spotify.. There were so many little details that I did not realize I had missed when I was younger. The fact that their mother married her half uncle, don't remember that at all. Or the portion where Chris forces himself on Cathy, I have no recollection of that happening.

I love this book and always will love this book from cover to cover. The tragedy, to the hopefulness of be welcomed into a grandparents home they never knew they had, to the unwelcomed feeling, to them running away. Reading this in the point of view of the siblings and how you can read and see how little the mother eventually cares, really hits you in the feelings. A mother should never act how this one did, even if it was for a large fortune.

I will be listening to the rest of this series on Audio, there are more books now than when I first read them as a kid so I can't wait to see how this goes.

i was always under the impression that this book was some weird romance incest book and i rightfully never planned on reading it until i watched someone explain the plot of it on youtube and discovered it was so much more. it’s gothic horror in its purest form and tackles subjects like generational trauma as well as the psychological effects of isolation, religion, loneliness, money, and the loss of innocence. the story became shockingly devastating as the story progressed and i desperately wanted them to escape their confinement. if an incestual relationship occurs its only a result of prolonged captivity and is meant to make the reader understand how devastating the kids circumstances are. it is not to be romanticized and if you like chris and cathy together there is something deeply wrong with you!! i know what happens in the next books and i still stand by this i don’t care!!!  i desperately wish this book was taken more seriously and not just seen as a trashy/ scandalous read.
