Crosby's first novel republished after the success of his excellent crime novels Razorblade Tears and All the Sinners Bleed. He admits in his introduction that it's rough around the edges. All his books have an excellent narrator--Adam Lazarre-White. A perfect book for a long road trip, engaging story.

The pacing of this was a little shaky at times and ended a little abruptly but I still enjoyed it! I’ve loved all his books so far.

I was totally engrossed in the story from beginning to end. S. A. Cosby really knows how to create flawed characters that you root for, and Nate is no exception. You can see the roots of his sheriff character from All the Sinners Bleed in his creation of Nate, an ex-deputy, former marine, and assistant mortician - he builds such rich back stories for his protagonists, the nuance of which always reveals itself slowly throughout his novels.

The main reason this is a 4 star review has to do with his early writing style. So. Many. Similes.
“He clung to hope like a drunk clings to a railing on his way down the stairs.” They’re just all over the place here. But you can see his writing style developing in this early work. He’s playing with descriptions, and I absolutely love seeing his development as a writer.

I've developed an unhealthy obsession with S.A. Cosby's writing, his storytelling, his way with words, his masterful character building, his craft, his genius!

This is the third Cosby book im reading and just when I think it couldn't top how I felt about the previous two, My Darkest Prayer came through and just knocked it out the park. Nathan Waymaker is my kinda guy.

Hard-core, lawless but wears his heart on hid sleeve for everyone he cares about. His a man that has served his country, his community, have lost everything that means the most to him. He is angry and is using that to rebuild his life the best he knows how. This book needs to be on a big screen somewhere! Absolute genius storytelling!

So good…..and the narration was amazing. Happy to see that they used the same narrator for his latest book, which I plan to start next.
