Enjoyable because it was an easy, light read and well, Star Wars. But compared to similar Star Trek novels, this book just didn't have the writing I was looking/hoping for.

Fun book, but muddled by excessive inclusions that weren't key to the story

At times this just felt like collection of teasers for new novels set in the Star Wars universe. Overall it was an interesting story set in a chaotic time, but it also felt like a lot of things were added just to get people excited for new stories. It often felt like the author had a chart of alien species on his wall and tried to incorporate every one he could - it was helpful to have Wookieepedia loaded up as I read this.

It seems this book hasn't got a lot of good reviews, I've seen all the people complaining about the 'disneyfication' of Star Wars. However, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and can't wait to read the rest of the series!

I listened to the audio book of this and it was excellent and entertaining. I know enough to know that this book was controversial and has gotten a lot of hate for several reasons, none of which I think are merited. Wendig expands the Star Wars galaxy through adding diverse characters and effectively using interludes; he shows the chaotic and unsure nature of the galaxy through using the present tense in his storytelling. I'm excited for the other books in this trilogy.

2022 Reread: Interesting to read this in a post-TROS world. This book does some things that many Star Wars books do that personally kind of irritate me, like naming every alien species, even when it's a side character (because it's Star! Wars! You're reading a Star War! Star! WARS!) but it is enjoyable overall.

The writing and structure is poor enough that I couldn’t call this good but I think I enjoyed it more than I didn’t and I like some of the characters well enough. I’ll have to think about if I’ll read the rest of the trilogy.
