Jenny can’t understand why her partner Joseph has woken her up and is insisting that they and their baby daughter leave the hotel where they’re staying. A car chase and shooting later she’s left her baby on a police car and is running for her life. Detective Inspector George Elms missed the call to the shooting and the following g morning is assigned to investigate a murder following an attempted burglary at a remote farmhouse - an elderly lady has been shot. I’ve enjoyed other Charlie Gallagher books before and this one certainly didn’t disappoint. Great story with action on almost every page - a really good read.

Thanks to Joffe Books and Charlie Gallagher for the ARC in return for an honest review.

Jenny doesn’t understand why her boyfriend wakes her up in a panic, demanding her to run with their daughter, that is until people start shooting at her.

While everyone is out looking for Jenny, newly promoted DI George Elms is dealing with a personal issue, the return of his estranged wife and his daughter. When he is tasked to investigate the shooting of an old woman on an isolated farm his head is not really on his work. Can George pull it together?

This is the fifth book in the series and the first I’ve read by Charlie Gallagher, which is probably not ideal but I can safely say this can be read as a stand-alone without feeling lost or having the previous books spoilt for you.

Wow, Charlie Gallagher just drops you right into the thick of the action which doesn’t let up at all. I enjoyed the fact it wasn’t overly complicated or had too many characters, a problem I’ve been seeing in crime fiction of late, just a great fast paced thrilling read. Also as Charlie is a real life police officer, it feels really authentic without getting bogged down in detail.

I have to be honest at first I didn’t really warm to George Elms that much. I understand he’s under a lot of pressure after being promoted and from his estranged wife but sometimes I felt like giving him a good smack and telling him to stop behaving so badly. By the end though, he got me on side.

Overall an action packed read and a must for fans of police procedurals.

This took me way longer to read than it should have done. To be fair to the book, this is not a genre that I generally reach for, but I thought I would give this one a try. It was ok.

The opening chapter was pretty exciting and fast paced and I thought I would fly through it. Unfortunately it soon kind of stalled. I would not say that it ever became boring exactly, but it definitely lost a bit of momentum and I found my attention drifting to other things.

I do not have an awful lot to say about this novel. The writing overall was fine. The resolution was fine. There was nothing that particularly bothered me and if you like this kind of detective/crime/murder mystery novel, you will probably get on with it pretty well.

I would be hesitant to pick up another book from this author, but this has more to do with the genre than the quality of the writing or the characters. It was fine. I just did not really feel gripped by it.
