Picked this up for the Moira Quirk narration, after greatly enjoying her in Gideon the Ninth. But I can now confirm I am still not, and never will be, a romance novel kind of lady. It's so frothy and silly and just way too innocent.

Widow and widower
Class differences
Dislike to lovers
Lord and his secretary
Hidden identity
Sex club
Progressive FMC who cares for (and becomes friends with) sex workers
Really dumb villains who absolutely get what’s coming to them
So hot
Possessive and stuck up MMC who I would absolutely run from in real life but gets absolutely destroyed by his FMC
A duel!

A reread and I understood Edward better this time around.* Plus I liked Anna even more somehow.

I love Hoyt.

Once again Quirk nails the narration.

*recognizing he is a fictitious person and nothing about him has changed since the first time I read it

**ugh because Anna is
“barren”
until Edward. 🙄

Very nice book, for a moment there I thought we were going to have a pregnancy plot and I was very very disappointed, but THANK GOD I was wrong!
I liked the raven story (sometimes it was more interesting than the actual plot )
And I must say, for someone that didn’t want their relationship to be “gossiped about” the fact that she was ZERO worried about the servants in the house  that are really the most gossipy kind ever to exist.
Going to the secondddd apparently it’s s very different plot from usual historical romances with the woman being  rich af and not the man

Quite a charming story with some memorable scenes! I really like Anna - headstrong and can stand up for herself, but not rude about it. Edward is borderline too much at the start, but does mellow out. You can feel the tension between them and the spice is GOLD ❤ Quite a lot actually! The sneaking out to be a courtesan plot is quite fun.
.
While I quite enjoyed the book because of its interesting characters and memorable plot, there are some aspects I don't quite like. The tone can be inconsistent at times, e.g. I as bracing for angst, but then seems it goes back to be cheerful? Some introduced characters also doesn't really add to the story, although their stories do get tied up nicely at the end.
.
The ending was nicely done! Seeing the villains got their comeuppance here is very satisfying

*I wouldn't recommend this to the Safety Gang members because even though the hero did not cheat, he wanted to, and that is the same, at least to me.

Nevertheless, I really enjoyed the writing style and the pacing, but I disliked the whorehouse scenes, and not because they weren't hot but because I found the heroine and hero both hypocritical.

I enjoyed most of this book but can’t help to have some qualms about how Edward willing to go to brothels just to not entangled himself with Anna and forget her. They have no relationship yet so can’t truly fault him, but imagine if its not Anna in London? Though, he feels guilty like he cheated kinda cute…. For me it would be nice if that man wanted Anna only and can’t fathom touching anyone else
