Wow. This book is amazing. Took me a little while to get into it and then I couldn’t put it down. What an extraordinary story with some truly unbelievable moments. There are so many things to unpack from this book and I’ll probably be thinking about this book for a long time!

This is a riveting read. And while I enjoyed The Great Santini more, I was fully engrossed in this one. This family teeters on the edge of destruction because of abuse, secrets, loyalties and alliances. Everyone suffers here, but everyone is also part of something that, for better or for worse, defines them and makes them who they are.

I thought that there was a lot of rambling that really took away from the story. The dialogue also felt forced and unnatural. I found myself not looking forward to picking it up and when I saw I still had about 300 pages left, I knew it was time to DNF.

I spent most of my read-through loathing everyone in this book and wishing it would be over sooner. But the ending was fairly appropriate and Conroy is a talented writer. 2.75 stars.

Poetic writing that drags on for too long, yet manages to be a clever capture of 20th century masculinity in that it purports to be the story of a woman’s descent into madness while trampling all over that narrative talking about what the boys and men experienced.

This is completely overwritten, I'm sorry to say. The definition of purple prose. Conroy has a few good moments of really beautiful writing throughout the book, but not enough to save him from himself in the rest of it. The characters themselves were inconsistent, and a lot of the plot points were unnecessary and unbelievable. Basically, Conroy really needs an editor. I finished it though, so at least I was invested enough to want to know how it was going to end!
