Not a normal choice of book for me however I was pleasantly surprised with this one. Glittering death is set back in the 1800’s, a group of women were sent from Australia to a small gold prospecting town in America to find themselves husbands. Alyssa our main character is hard not to like, a well educated lady helps her new found friends find love and settle.
A murder in town has everyone suspecting just one of the new comers. Alyssa and her friends take on the responsibility to find the real killer.
Overall a lovely story, love betrayal and friendship - what more could you want from a book!

I read the first in the Alyssa Chalmers series, The Case Of The Missing Bride, a while ago now so I was excited to hear that there was a second coming out! Don’t worry if you’ve not read the first it can easily be read as a standalone.

Glittering Death is set in British Columbia against the backdrop of the gold rush in 1862, where every man that was able tried their hand at prospecting in the hopes of finding gold.

Alyssa and her friends arrive at Run’s End where they find themselves face to face with the suitors who’d paid for their voyage from Australia. But Alyssa has other plans, she wants to get back to England, a place she left as a child.

Her plans are scuppered when the hotel owner is murdered, followed by a smallpox epidemic means no one can go out of the small town. Tensions bubble in the town but it’s up to Alyssa to figure out who the murderer before it’s too late.

What a sweet historical mystery Glittering Death is! It has a gentle pace, with a subtle nod to classic mysteries and films while still feeling fresh and new.

I still think Alyssa is a fabulous main character. Independent, clever and never backs down from a challenge, even if that includes domestic chores which she’s not very good at!

I absolutely loved the historical setting of the story. I don’t know much about late 19th century Canada but I feel like after reading this book I know a lot more. The author’s research underpinned the story well without overwhelming you with knowledge or info dumps.

It did unfortunately take a while to get to the actual mystery and I may have guessed the identity of the killer quite early on but that didn’t spoil my overall enjoyment of the book.

Glittering Death is solid historical mystery, with plenty of red herrings and intriguing characters, perfect for anyone who loves a cosy mystery. I can’t wait to see where Alyssa’s story goes and read more of her adventures.

I read this as a stand alone and havent read the first book. Like many others, I can guarantee you can read this as a stand alone.
It did take me awhile to get into the story yet I enjoyed every minute of it. The author was able to bring my imagination out and I could picture where characters were through this historical setting.
I enjoyed that at times that I couldn't put this down and wanted to keep reading, finding out about the characters and the mystery involved.

Glittering Death is the follow on to The Case Of The Missing Bride. It does read as a stand alone though if you haven’t had the pleasure of reading it.

Alyssa and the brides have finally reached their destination and given a warm welcome. It’s all quite an exciting time with endless opportunities for many of them. That is before there is a murder which leaves the town in turmoil.

Alyssa is a likeable protagonist who is quite forward thinking for a woman in her times. As in the last book, she takes it upon herself to find the murderer.

You really get a sense of what life was like in the era that the story is set. It’s nice to be transported back in time. It was also good to catch back up with the characters to see what the future has in store for them after getting to know them in the previous novel. I was definitely intrigued as to the bit of romance surrounding Alyssa.

Glittering Death is a cozy mystery set at a gentle pace that quickly draws you in. There is a nice build up of suspense as to who the killer is and I didn’t see it coming as to who it could be, so was a good surprise. A good historical crime novel.

My thanks to Jill Burkinshaw at Books ‘n’ All Promotions for an advanced readers copy of this book. All opinions are my own and not biased in anyway.
