Habitual, comfortable activity is the worst kind of prison, because the bars are concealed.
Foe is a sci-fi domestic thriller that focuses on married couple, Junior and Hen, while they prepare to be separated for an extended period of time after receiving news that Junior has been selected for a “fortunate conscription.”

This was weird af in the best way possible. It becomes pretty clear what the main twists will be while reading, but the execution of the story will still have you feeling unsettled and curious about what’s to come. Reid’s writing style was pretty perfect for this book. The ending was the icing on the cake for me.

One of the main themes explored is coming to the realization that you may be in love with who someone used to be and how it can be difficult to accept that you likely won’t get to experience that version of them again.

Unfortunately I figured this out from page 23. I think they gave away too much in the synopsis and it ruined "the mystery". Iain Reid is a master at slowly unraveling an uncomfortable situation, one that makes you think. Because I had figured out what was going on all the mysteries and deeper questions unfolded quickly and it was just waiting for the moment to arise.

This book was not at all what I expected!
My edition had beetles on the cover and I thought I’d be getting loads of bug and insect horror. There was some bugs but not much.
Anyway.. I don’t even think this is a horror. More of a psychological suspense in my opinion.
It’s a character driven story and as such the pacing is slow and deliberate. Very atmospheric book with an isolated setting in the middle of some hot and dusty area. The masterful descriptions really make you feel that heaviness of the air, heat and humidity. Loved it.
It’s set in the future with a small cast of characters, quite intimate.
And the ending was brilliant!
