Getting a glimpse into the drug/counterculture of the day was interesting. Most everything else was either boring or depressing. I'm glad I read it, but I'd be lying if I didn't say it was a bit of a fight to get through at times.

Helppolukuinen, hauska ja viihdyttävä teos, jonka kulttiarvon ymmärrän, mutta jonka sisältöä en tule muistamaan enää muutaman viikon päästä.

couldn't put this down to save my life. every drug under the sun was abused, and yet the only thing i found to be the most dangerously addicting was HST's brilliant style of dead-pan comedic writing.

that attorney is a goddamn legend!

I came across this book through the movie, which I abandoned in the first ten minutes almost nine years ago (that was a scary sentence to write). I abandoned it because I was not ready for it, I still am not now but a lot has changed. I am more familiar with the references in this book which basically amounts to the hatred towards the failure to win with sticking flowers down gun barrels. I grew up in the generation which is finally starting to understand that any weapon you forge against capitalism is absorbed inside it. Sun in today's world is not the disinfectant its an capitalist tractor beam for the underground. And what did we do with that knowledge? We decided to give up and join it. The passage about the wave of the 60s (you know the one, and if you don't I don't want to spoil it for you), is applicable to the past decade and the decade before. Perhaps it's just universal and the author was being cheeky about it. I was always told Hunter was a sneaky bastard, I think I am beginning to understand how.

Apart from that there is a lot of talk about how drugs effect the man and stuff. Which is interesting but has been sort of done before. Yes sir you have taken an impressive amount of drugs to foolishly seek to expand your mind, but it has long since been proved that all that does it is give you funny ideas. Look what you yourself did with it? Going on and on about the american dream which is just (spoiler alert!!!) some ironic statement about god damn circuses.

In the end all this book did was teach me about debauchery. I used to think I knew, I used to think I have done it. But it opened my eyes to things which were so outside my imagination that I can't even imagine imagining it.

Look, if you have read this far you deserve to know. I don't really have anything intelligent to say about this book, and I must accept that the 5* review is more borne out of confusion than anything else. Which seems just as well, as I think anything intelligent to say about this classic must have already been said by people more knowledgeable than me. It's a quest for something which is everywhere and a treaties on something everyone basically understands now. Perhaps if Hunter had got this into hands of more people we would have had a different history. But we get it and we don't care.
