It’s one of the best titles I have ever come across, The Sound of Things falling. Mysterious title and also the story is full of mysteries that are not really revealed. As the main character wants to know why a man he hardly knew was shot in front of him, he finds out more and more information about tragic and brutal parts of Columbian history. It’s also about dealing with trauma and about being alone with trauma and not being able to communicate with your family. I didn’t love the book, because maybe I could not entirely relate to the main characters. I was happy in the end to finish it, but I must say that the language was beautiful and it is a book that raises questions on the influence of violence on the human condition how it leads to more violence and the deaths of rather innocent people which are still urgent.

This was a reading group selection for this month, otherwise I'm not sure I would have bothered finishing it.
There's quite a lot that I had trouble accepting in this, I didn't care about most of the characters and many were quite shadowy.
I know it's meant to shine a light on how the troubles in Columbia affected everyone, but I'm not sure this was the most sympathetic way to do so.

The best moment was reading the transcribed black box tape. Those paragraphs were the most compelling of the entire book.

It is a novel set in late 20th-century Colombia, a country struggling with the violence of the drug war.
There, we find the fear and post-traumatic shock of an individual and a society that no longer recognizes each other after attacks that cause deaths and injuries but also collateral victims.
We realize how the simple need to earn money to feed one's family has gradually transformed into international trafficking, which is challenging to get rid of afterward.
We see the need to understand and exorcise our demons.
It's a story of psychology and society, about discovering a corner of the world that we know little about.
