More than halfway in, and I just couldn't find a reason to care about any of the characters or plot lines. Some of the writing style was hard to follow, in what was dialogue and what wasn't. It wasn't bad, it was just meh.

It's well worth persevering through the difficult-to-navigate first third of the book. I darned near gave up, but thought "Seriously, this won FIVE major awards; I need to find out why!" And I did--the story coalesces after a while and all the shifting perspectives, times and genders take shape and build toward the compelling finish.

It's good! It starts _very_ slowly. Part of the reason I can't give it five stars is because the prose itself is sufficient to the task of describing the action and the internal world of Breq, but not particularly stylistically interesting. One would be hard pressed to detect a unique voice in any particular paragraph -- but the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Not, perhaps, something I could or would say about the subsequent novels.

Very interesting book.... Reading in the first person perspective of someone who has multiple bodies is kinda confusing in a good way. I'd rate it 5 stars but I don't think the ship hierarchy was explained well enough, so much of the first half of the book was difficult to understand. Like I still don't really understand the relationship between captain/lietenant/esk/ancillary/human/raadch/other ship roles.

Definitely in my top 2 books concerning gender neutral characters navigating an ice planet (at least for the first half)
