Justice League Vol. 4: The Grid (the New 52) by Geoff Johns

What it has going for it: focus on other characters like The Atom, Firestorm, Element woman, which play well since the Justice League should be more than just Superman/Batman/Wonder Woman (although we do get plenty of that); also, we get our first view of Batman's "brother eye" mentality from the old continuity in the New 52.

What it has going against it: The whole volume exists only to build up to the Forever Evil event. This means that a lot of what happens doesn't make sense on its own, and the book is missing several introductions that must have happened on the Justice League Dark and/or Justice League International titles.

This Justice League book is great! I loved the character development and dialogue. There's some really good humor mixed in too. The artwork is stunning, especially those splash pages with a million characters. And the storyline is perfectly paced and drew me in. This is easily the best superhero team book I've read in awhile, on par with Bendis' work on Avengers.

Alright. Halfway through the series. Stopping here for a while and will pick up again when it finishes in May.

Anyway, mixed feelings about this volume. New fans might have a problem getting into the flow. And you might want to read Trinity War for that. Otherwise, a really good and entertaining volume. Shouldn't have ended on that cliffhanger :/

Most of this is Trinity war story, so see that review if you're curious. The rest is fluff. *sigh*

Please see my review of Justice League: Trinity War for my thoughts on this arc, as they're essentially the same book, with this volume functioning as a Justice League-centered prologue chapter, in much the same way that Justice League of America, Vol. 1: World's Most Dangerous is a JLA-centered look at how that team became involved in the Trinity War.

Unlike (seemingly) a lot of people, I actually really, really liked this. My biggest complaint might just be that not all the Justice League candidates that were considered were actually chosen...only because it would've made the male-female ratio from 6-1 to 10-7, and that would've been awesome. Ah well,
Spoilerat least two of the three that were chosen were female...though of course one ended up being evil, so really it was 1-1; which was the other thing I didn't really like as much, because I loved Atom, and really wish she would've remained good/on the team. Ahhh well
. Other than those things, though, I really enjoyed this.

This volume of the Justice League jumped all over the place. It was really difficult to pick up the story thread.

What happened to the references that old comic books had that told you what issues to read for the backstory? That would've been immensely helpful here.

I wanted to like it, but I just couldn't follow it.

1. I'm glad the US Government is finally realizing that these superheroes could be a problem.
2. I'm glad Superman and Wonder Woman seem to be finding love.
3. I'm glad the Bat thinks ahead
4. Why on earth do the superheroes hang out in their space station hide out in full ridiculous costume? That seriously takes me out of the action every freaking time.

This was a pretty good volume.

It starts with Atom, Firestorm and Element woman, the new recruits talking about the league and then they are attacked by Despero and we see the battle that happened with Martian Manhunter and his re-coming and we see hints of big things going on and the new recruits and their dynamics and all and the nod to 5-year events that happened in this book!

But what was awesome was seeing how they deal with the trinity war event like we see what Superman does and the fallout of that and the emergence of Secret society and the later coming of
Spoiler Crime Syndicate
and its to be read with the main Trinity war event and it actually ties in pretty well and is such a fascinating read like wow!

Johns has a way of making things epic and he does the same here and gives every page a moment of bombastic-ness and the ending and the main story here is so good and also the coming of Cyborg's GRID which was such a great twist!
