Just to be clear, Captain Marvel is so sexy. This art style was bomb and the dialogue was so so funny. Definitely will keep going with this one!

Exceptional Marvel space book. Which is damning with faint-praise, because in general I find Marvel space books to be unreadable. This one was readable which put it way above average. But it takes place within the solar-system so perhaps those are less bad. Sure the book didn't make a whole lot of sense, and made relatively poor use of the characters. And the Alpha Flight team being in space was never explained. It still didn't actually suck. Perhaps some later book in this series will go back to being character driven.

Great art, good character moments, meandering plot. Still have no idea why Alpha Flight was chosen to work on a space station - Carol's agency clearly should've been S.W.O.R.D. Abigail Brand's involvement only drives that oversight home.

A fun read that did a good job introducing the Alpha Flight team and not just focusing on Captain Marvel. The overall character development of all the principal members of the team was well done and gave each character a clear and unique personality. The plot was a classic space mystery that kept your attention and was not overly cookie-cutter in it's execution. I found the volume to focus more on character-building and setting up the framework (as indicative of a fist volume) but the execution was really well done. The plot wasn't as strong as I would've liked but I do believe the volume still warranted a 5-star rating. can't wait to continue the series.

I was underwhelmed by the previous iteration of Captain Marvel, which had great promise held back by lackluster and, to be honest, incompetent storytelling.

I picked this up for two reasons: a new creative team and Alpha Flight. This version is merely okay.

Carol Danvers and three members of AF are put into a Star Trek-meets-Alien type of situation, with a story that starts strong but kind of trips up on the plotting and timing as it goes. You can see the "Writing 101" cliches immediately, with a story that begins in media res and then jumps to "Yesterday." Then there are multiple versions of The Countdown, used to artificially ramp up tension. There are a couple Reversals and some Reveals, all of which are telegraphed and land softly.

It's not that this stuff is annoying so much as it's amateur. The weird thing is that comics today have such decompressed stories yet they feel light on character development and plot. This story suffers the same problem. 25-30 years ago this would be two issues, max.

I'm a big fan of Alpha Flight's original incarnation -- in fact, the same day I bought this I ordered the big retrospective collection, [b:Alpha Flight by John Byrne Omnibus|30621671|Alpha Flight by John Byrne Omnibus|John Byrne|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1470293667s/30621671.jpg|51153229] -- so it was disappointing to see Puck, Aurora and Sasquatch used so sparingly. Puck is an actual supporting character, but both Aurora and Sasquatch could be replaced by redshirts and you'd never know. I think Sasquatch has about six lines in the whole thing, and since Carol is stronger than he is, he's rendered redundant in any action scenes.

With Kelly Sue DeConnick's tenure over, the reins of Captain Marvel are handed to Agent Carter showrunners Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters. Unchained by the restrictions of network TV budgets, the writing duo unleashes a... perfectly adequate sci-fi adventure.

The decision to put her in command of an Earth-orbiting space station named after Alpha Flight (who are under her immediate supervision) creates a continuity with her stint as a space ambassador before the Secret Wars event, which can only help, as I always feel like Captain Marvel is a book in search of a solid identity.

Now please build these relationships into something proper and lasting, editorial! Don't pull her away to try out something new once again.
