Ok, so can we talk for a moment about the title of this book. How fun and original is it. This book is a quick read. Yet, the humor that I was looking for did escape me. I smiled a few times but did not laugh out loud like I wanted and hoped for.

Of the two women, Fiona and Angie; Angie was my favorite. She was more likable. Therefore, I was cheering for her. I mean, two women sharing a man; it is bound to happen that one of them will connect on a better level with the guy, even if there are "rules".

Speaking of the "guy. Jake was kind and good looking. With each turn of the page, I found myself falling more and more in love with Jake. While, I may not have loved this book, I would read another one by this author.

Rules for Thursday Lovers was an unexpectedly funny read. It did take me a wee while to get into the story and get to know the characters but once I did, I really enjoyed this. Angie meets old school friend Fiona on a night out and they rekindle what used to be a close friendship. Fiona in particular is very dis-satisfied with her marriage and life in general and suggests that the two women advertise for a time-share lover. They make up a set of rules including no falling in love, strictly week about and both women to approve the candidate. It seemed a bit unlikely to me that Angie would have agreed to this but setting that aside, once she was reluctantly involved, the story quickly became very entertaining!

As you might expect, the rules go out the window once the two friends actually find a man to share. Or rather they don't find a suitable man, as they have very different tastes. There are so many crossed wires, mistaken identities and misunderstandings. The scrabble set on the front cover features in a very funny scene. It turns out that the characters all have much closer links to each other than you would think. And of course, they have no clue about this making it even funnier and frequently have conversations at cross purposes! A few side-plots featuring a pick-pocket who pops up everywhere and a violin playing escapee from the old people's home where Angie works add to the humour.

Lots of the farcical situations put me in mind of tv programmes like Fawlty Towers or Absolutely Fabulous. To compare with books, Rules for Thursday Lovers is written with a similar kind of humour and situations to Robert Bryndza's Coco Pinchard books or A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian. A highly entertaining read for when you want a good giggle.

When I read the book description of ‘Rules for Thursday Lovers’ I knew this would be a different kind of book then my usual reads. But since that was what I was looking for at the moment I decided I really wanted to give this book a try. And don’t you just love that cover?!

In ‘Rules for Thursday Lovers’ we meet Angie and Fiona, two old school friends. Both woman are kind of bored and frustrated with their lives. One alcohol involved evening Angie and Fiona share their stories with each other and soon a plan is formed. Angie and Fiona will be looking for a lover they can timeshare. An hilarious journey starts.

To be completely honest, it took me a little while to really get into this story. I think this was because I needed to get used to the writing style. Especially in the beginning the story felt a little all over the place. Not necessarily in a bad way, but I had some trouble figuring out what was going on. Thankfully I got used to the writing and I could really start enjoying the story and the characters.

I really enjoyed the friendship between Angie and Fiona. It was fun to read and really entertaining. There were definitely some really funny moments which made me want to keep on reading this book till the very end. The best part for me was reading about how different both Angie and Fiona’s character were. I found reading about them very entertaining.

The one problem I had with this book was the whole looking for a lover, while being married part. I don’t understand how people can do that, and it definitely made me opinionated about this read. I tried to get past my personal feelings, and although I think I managed to see past it more than I thought I would, I still feel like I wasn’t completely able to get past it. And because of that I didn’t love this book as much as I wanted to.

Still, ‘Rules for Thursday Lovers’ is definitely an enjoyable read.

I genuinely had no idea what I was letting myself in for when I signed up for the bookstagram tour for “Rules for Thursday lovers” but my god this novel was what I was needing.

Hilarious and unbelievable, yet I was still hooked on Angie’s and Fiona’s antics.
Although I did find myself actually feeling sorry for them both a little- both marriages were clearly struggling.

I did notice a fair few typos throughout the novel but that did not put me off too much.
I found that jumping between characters in the chapters was quite confusing, maybe a page break could have been used to make it clear that we were reading about a different character.

Speaking of characters, I’m not sure who my favourite was, it’s a tie between Jake and Derek. In a perfect world I would have liked the characters to have been more fleshed out, but this was a fun quick read none the less.

I won’t lie, you may sit there and think that this novel is so far-fetched, there were definitely chapters that had me chuckling with how silly some sections were, but it was still incredibly amusing and I would find myself giggling for a while.

Ideal for relaxing by the pool in summer or sitting in for a cosy evening by the fire in the winter.

A love story with more twists and turns than a back-country road. I found this story both sweet and exciting. It was a nice light-hearted read, and the story was told from multiple perspectives. I especially enjoyed the engaging plot that went beyond a simple "rom-com" format and the dynamic characters that helped make the story truly come to life. The book became harder to put down the more I read, and I'm a little sad it's over. I will be recommending it to many of my girlfriends as a nice good-natured read; guaranteed to achieve a smile!
