Recovering from the rather calamitous events of the last book, Miles has to solve an unusual murder mystery while trying to figure out how to deal with his two alternate lives. This one is less action, and more introspection, mystery solving, and Barrayaran politics, always with Bujold’s signature wit and incredibly well-rounded, imperfect, and very real characters.

Reading in chronological order, and this is definitely my favorite so far.

Re-read this in one setting last night, as the book that first got me into this series. Even better with all the background filled-in.

Yay. LMB continues to rock my world (as does Miles Vorkosigan).

One thing I especially like about this series is how the characters develop and grow as the books progress, including some of the side characters who ebb and flow in their prominence from one story to the next. This one does a masterful job of showing Miles maturing; I really appreciated that the focus wasn't "Miles in peril" but rather a more soul-searching Miles who still manages to do what he does best. I would have considered this a 5-star book except for the beginning. In the other books in the series so far, Bujold does a wonderful job of building the backstory for those who are new to the series little by little as necessary throughout the book, but this one had a rather long and more traditional series beginning that was mostly filling in the reader on the characters, setting, and past history. As someone reading through the whole series one after the other, that was a bit boring, though not terrible.

Not one of the better Vorkosigan books. The solution to the mystery in it comes out of nowhere and, while it's plausible, it's a very convenient solution relying on a lot of stuff the reader doesn't get to see till near the end. The final three chapters appear to be taked on to tie up a few ooose ends.

But it still has the humour and the excellent dialogue, a bit more on Barrayar's society and the little bit of offworld -intrigue that makes thse such fun things to read. I move on to the next one with a suffused glee that isn't usually suffused by the end of books in this series.
