My kids enjoyed this book. The writing is fun and engaging for children. My issue was with how Columbus was set on a pedestal.

Junie B is one of Atty's favorite characters at the moment. She is very cheeky and while the series has gotten criticized for bad grammar, a reader at Atty's level knows the grammatical errors are intentional and finds them funny. He even corrects them most of the time, which I imagine is the desired effect after all. This volume is particularly great because it deals with the fears of a new school teacher and a change in the cast of regular friends, anxieties to which kids in this age range can really relate.

This was the first read out loud I choose to read with my firsties this year. Being writen through a childs age their age really got their attention. They related a lot to the book. There were great vocabulary words and situations that lead to discussions in our class. We had a lot of fun reading this together.

As a parent, I don't especially like Junie B. Jones. She's obnoxious, has poor grammar, and uses words like stupid - a bad word in our house. These are all the same reasons my first grader loves her! He's a bit of a reluctant reader so if Junie B. gets him excited about reading, then I'm willing to tolerate her.

Shipwrecked sneaks in quite a few facts about Christopher Columbus and his voyage to America. Children won't have any idea that they are actually learning because the story is entertaining and funny. Since this book is for first graders, it doesn't go into the ethical issues associated with Columbus's journey, like imperialism and genocide. It actually doesn't say anything about what happened after Columbus landed - the focus is entirely on the voyage.

If your child is a Junie B. Jones fan, he or she will definitely enjoy this book.
