I have such mixed feelings about this book… slow and tense (dull at times) but the third act is thrilling. Equal parts homoerotic and existential, but the relationship between Louis and Claudia is near pedophilic. The TV show certainly makes changes to the story for the better.

I have not had this much fun reading an actual physical book in... honestly, maybe years.
That being said, parts of this might be some of the most atrocious things I've ever read.
In any case, it's greatly entertaining and I love being insufferably insane about it.

Louis my beloved, autistic coded Catholic guilt riddled queer icon who was married and divorced twice without ever even noticing bc he has not one single social skill beyond being polite, you will always be famous. Go send those insanely powerful narcissistic monsters into a downward spiral simply by being pretty and sad🫶🏻✨️✨️

i'm almost as confused on my feelings about this book as i was about the book itself.

i read this to satiate the growing brainrot from the tv show and it's very different, but i can see the base inspiration. as a whole, it was beautifully written and had some really poignant passages, but also it was boring as shit.

it was incredibly confusing at some points, notably a bit after louis arrives in europe; the long paragraphs of angsting did make it a bit hard to decipher. what the fuck happened with madeleine.

one good thing: it was homoerotic as hell, and even occasionally blasphemous. so yay i guess i just wish it didn't come with the pedophilia

other gripes:
  • anne rice really dug herself a hole by making feeding so erotic and a literal allegory for sex while also having her characters feed on children all the while
  • louis and claudia's relationship is creepy as fuck. he refers to her as his lover and wonders what it would be like if she was his paramour, so.
  • i felt rather detached at some point due to everything quite literally being dialogue told to the interviewer, which made it hard to get through
  • lestat :( miss you problematic babygirl
  • not really a gripe with the book per se but i cannot tell you how much it threw me off whenever louis or armand were described as white, which was. a LOT.
  • i know this was part of the effect, but the ending was just really unsatisfying imo. it didn't feel worth it to read a book as long as iwtv and there was nothing else.

well now i'm going to go have my heart broken by the show goodbye

I came to this book from the TV series, so I may be biased. I found the first part of four of Interview With The Vampire (which is actually half of the book) slow and a bit boring. There's so much that can be done with vampiric turning and yet I felt the most interesting thing was that they shit themselves. I enjoyed the second half of the book more<spolier>, especially Claudia's death, which was so visceral and hit me a lot harder than in the series. I also enjoyed the repeated arson, and the little glimmers of the Lestat we come to know in later books through Louis' biased retelling. I'm glad I read this book so I can read the rest of TVC and I can understand the TV series better, but I don't know if I'll be rereading it aside from certain chapters.

Wow. Truly one of the best vampire stories. No adaptation has in any way captured the feeling this book gave off. It’s truly remarkable. I can’t imagine a better first vampire novel. I’ve seen plenty movies, shows and games of vampire stories but this is my first ever vampire novel and it was remarkable.

The way Anne Rice has such a command of her prose is truly awe inspiring and the level at which relationships and the drama therein is what drives the plot is absolutely what I desire to do with my writing and I now see it can be done successfully for this style of story.

i'm reading this as a result of my obsession with the tv show and needing to consume everything that is attached to it. so ofcourse i had to read this book and it really did not disappoint. anne's prose is truly something else this book did not have one dull moment for me, i read it as if it was already a series and i'm so grateful that we got one. this book makes me understand why the tv show is as good as it is, it can take the dark and gritty stuff from the book and give it even more weight and power. i never expected it to almost be a 5 star read for me but it surprised me in so many ways. i feel lucky i get to experience it through the eyes of the tv series though because it gives me more attachment to a character like louis, who is so different in the book and with seeing the show first is easier to root for and understand. i am so excited to read "the vampire lestat" to see his perspective and his story since he has become one of my favourite characters after watching the show. at the end of the day it was a really good and true experience reading this.
