My Libby loan was close to ending and I didn't want to force myself to read the other half of the book in two days. The wait list for an extension is quite long and I don't know if I'll get back to it or not.

I went into this book not knowing much about it, other than it being a “classic” vampire story with various tv adaptations. However, the writing style was not what I expected. The narrative voice reminded me a lot of Frankenstein (especially how self-deprecating the narrator is), or other classic Gothic texts like Dracula (obviously!) or Jekyll and Hyde. Like the boy interviewing Louis, I felt a compelling need to know the end of the story, so I kept reading. However, I was bored by the excessive detail and long-winded (dare I say whiny) explanations by Louis, so I ended up rushing through to the end. I felt like there was no true dramatic conclusion and characters kept being introduced that I thought would be more significant and well-developed than they were (ex: Madeline, the guy in Europe with the dead wife, Santiago, etc.) I also felt like Louis’ relationship with Lestat was not as interesting and complex as it should have been conveyed; their final meeting was also a huge letdown. The same could be said about his relationship with Armand. And I also felt so uncomfortable with his relationship with Claudia - it was creepy and almost pedophile-like. 🤢 Overall, a disappointing book and I would not continue the series…but I definitely want to watch the show!

I don’t really understand why this book is so beloved. Much of it was very slow and it’s a bit hard to read as a lot of the problematic/evil behavior was pretty gross. I don’t think the point was to glorify their evil behaviors of course, but I don’t enjoy reading it. I can appreciate the internal struggle Louis deals with of what is evil and his guilt over being a vampire, and how immortality itself can be a purposeless and boring existence, but I wouldn’t recommend this book or re read it.

I have not had this much fun reading an actual physical book in... honestly, maybe years.
That being said, parts of this might be some of the most atrocious things I've ever read.
In any case, it's greatly entertaining and I love being insufferably insane about it.

Louis my beloved, autistic coded Catholic guilt riddled queer icon who was married and divorced twice without ever even noticing bc he has not one single social skill beyond being polite, you will always be famous. Go send those insanely powerful narcissistic monsters into a downward spiral simply by being pretty and sad🫶🏻✨️✨️
