Just the Sexiest Man Alive by Julie James

Well any book that makes liberal use of Pride and Prejudice references is a big win for me! This was my first Julie James read and I will absolutely be going back for more and more!

A light and fun contemporary romance, it was sweet, it was funny and it was surprisingly clean - but it totally worked! Jason was a fantastic Hollywood caricature, sexiest man alive / womanizer, who just can not believe that Taylor is not actually falling into his bed. And Taylor is a workaholic lawyer who kicks ass in the courtroom.

Their banter is fun, the supporting characters were enjoyable and it was an overall treat to read.

[SPOILER ALERT]
ETA: I seriously have NO idea why so many people put this on an Erotic shelf. Seriously, this book barely moves past first base until the VERY end, and then it's ALL behind closed doors.

Iā€™ve battled back and forth about whether to give this book 3 or 4 stars, mostly because Iā€™ve read Julie Jamesā€™ other books and this just didnā€™t hit the mark for me. There were so many moments where I just HATED Jason. He was so condescending, whiny, and disrespectful of her time and her career that a woman like Taylor, seemingly in charge of her own life, passionate about her job, strong and independent, shouldnā€™t be interested in him at all. The way he waved off her career and then only saw her as ā€œhot lawyerā€ was eye roll worthy. He honestly had no real personality at the beginning, and Iā€™d argue itā€™s not because we as the audience hadnā€™t gotten to know him yet. She tells him heā€™s smart and I was immediately like ā€œehhhhhh, grasping at straws for that oneā€. Physically yeah, sure, heā€™s supposed to be stupid hot, but is it just me that canā€™t find someone attractive if there isnā€™t more of an emotional connection? The idea that half of the book was him acting this way and her acquiescing to his requests was a bummer. I was rooting for Scott for a good chunk of that, until he became a total dick and wasnā€™t so subtle about his motives.

Then of course, there were some really great moments where Jason was a really lovable guy that clearly cared for her when it mattered most and he finally became someone that was interesting. Also loved the moment at the Black and Pink Ball where she told Scott to fuck off in the classiest way possible - probs gonna have to steal that some day, somehow.

Itā€™s easy to see why Jason liked her, but Iā€™m still skeptical about why she ended up choosing him over her whole life and career in Chicago. Itā€™d be one thing if she had been grappling with her doubts and finding her place in the world while also trying to figure out her feelings for Jason, but this straight felt like her giving up everything because his career and choices were more important than hers. She had no other support in L.A. Her friends and family were back home and she was just molding to his life, his requests. Can a woman choose a man over her passions and change her mind about her life goals while still being a feminist and happy with her choices? Ab-so-fucking-lutely. Do I think this is JJā€™s best example of that? Not so much. The ā€œproposalā€ was kind of weak, and it was a little too nice and tidy that she had jobs lined up after their, admittedly week romp sesh that they had instead of being at the movie premier. It almost made it seem like a redemption chapter since she just threw away everything sheā€™d worked for and then magically thinks to open her own firm. Someone like Taylor, not really thinking things through all at the last minute just didnā€™t seem true to her. I know a lot of people like that sort of thing, and find it romantic, but without the super sexy scenes and the complexity lacking from Jason, I finally decided to give this a 3. But hey, I still liked it. It was good for a guilty pleasure, mostly mild romance read and I will always support JJ, so yes, read this book if these things are enough to satisfy your romance reading goblins.

I really liked the heroine, at least at first, she's portrayed as smart, strong no non-sence, savvy sassy woman with great intuition and a keen ability to read people. And in time in the middle of book she is turned into a babbling teenager unsure of herself and is easily influenced by the wrong person.

I seriously detest love triangles, the blurb saw conveniently deceptive as no this fact. Is an infuriating concept and i have little patience to read a story i when i know not just how it turns out but how it'll progress.

It angers me because for the first 80 pages into the book, its a brilliantly well constructed story, the draws you in. Then it all goes to shit.

Until... we skip to the mid-way to the end, and its an amazing read again. Plus ending was cute though.

I have a feeling I need to re-read this book though. The infuriating bit blind-sided me a bit.

The book is fairly good... The dialogue between Taylor and Jason is super smart and at times amusing the novel had a lot of potential to develop into sth more profound
Overall I enjoyed reading it although I don't fancy reading books as pdfs but I couldn't leave it without finishing
