3.5 stars. This series has a lot of potential, I think. This book was good, but it felt like the first book before we learn a lot more. It was a promising start, but it definitely seemed like a start. There were several moments that were very emotional, which surprised me. I'd like to see Sophie make some more female friends possibly also and not have so many guys after her, which honestly just seems ridiculous. However, it seems like the ratings just go up with each book, so I'm excited to see what happens in the next one!

this book was so nostalgic for me!! i've reread this series so many times I practically have the entire plot memorized, but it was fun for me to see the story in a new format. It was helpful to see the locations as drawings so I could picture them easier. Some of my favorite scenes happen in this book, including the Splotching competition, the Drooly Boys (although not called that here), "Is that my dress?", "Are you lost?" and Stina's hair (or the lack of it). Keefe and Dex were obviously my favorite side characters in this book (I know I'm supposed to like Fitz but its just so hard after reading the rest of the series). I loved seeing all the foreshadowing to future events (Kenric and Oralie, Mr. Forkle, Project Moonlark, Prentice, Jolie, etc)!! It was overall a good book, but it was lowkey weird for me to readjust to the beginning of the series only a few months after reading the most recent, esp bc the characters are about 4 years younger and don't know anything yet.

My two 7th grade students know I love reading and were begging (borderline threatening) me to read this series. C told me she would bring in the first book ASAP and I couldn’t say no to her. (Also it was double spaced so I knew it would be a quick read HA!)

Yes, there is some very obvious foreshadowing for YA romance tropes and some “omg I’m so special and different and powerful :(((“ pick-me moments from the protagonist…

Yet, I don’t know if I’m a bit biased/blinded by liking these two terrific student, but reading this book as an adult felt incredibly nostalgic for me. If twelve year old me read this series, I know it would be on the shelf next to Percy Jackson. Fun characters, CuTe BoiZ, magic that can be either powerful and funny, or both!

Highly recommend for the intended audience age!

Same issue. It lagged, no energy, and I didn’t particularly care for the art style.

Every book in the series ends on cliffhanger.

It took me a couple of days to review this book, but I needed to get over the feels that I had while reading this!! This book was so good that I had to read it in long increments and I am so glad that I read this! If you have feelings of not belonging or how to deal with personal demons in a fantasy setting you will love this book. I loved the world building and character progression. This book is so fast paced and thank god this book has a lot in the series already because I will keep devouring them!

I’ve read this book twice now, and I highly recommend. I can’t believe I didn’t pick up the series sooner. It’s not your average series, and definitely has its problems, but I’m in love with almost every character and the plot-lines tend to keep me going regardless of whether they make sense. I promise if you pick up this book, you’ll enjoy at least some of this series. It’s worth it :)
