Love the characters and the world building. Pace still not quite right, but the action is pretty well done.

The tension and suspense were well done in Spectyr and the overall plot was pretty good. However, there were sections that I found rather confusing, especially the final chapters of the book. I wasn't entirely certain what was happening or why it was happening. Finally, I think the final chapter was a bit brief. I would have liked some more closure re: Raed's family situation and Zofiya's faith.

Once more we are thrown into the world of geists and The Order when the rules don't seem to be holding. I love Sorcha, Raed, and Merrick so it was fun to see them again albeit in a different setting. This was a fun read that went places I didn't expect . It was also fun to get to see a little more history of the ancients and into the pasts of our main characters as well. I hate that it was kind of a cliff hanger but I'm invested enough in the main characters that I will seek the next installment out.

I am going to have to edit my shelves for books like this.
Spectyr completely lives up to the promise the author made in the first book, and I am completely hooked by the story of the magic weilding Deacons, Sorcha and Merrick, and their bonded companion Raen, cursed by (being) a terrible beast.
This still has the strange steampunk/pulp vibe from the first one, but while the last book was based in a pseudo-northern europe, this book takes us to a pseudo-northern africa. The eye of the storm is located in a mud palace that evokes the idea of the great mosque of Djenne, and we learn a whole lot more about the history of this world (especially through the experiences of Merrick).
I loved this book, but cant give it five, as the start was painfully slow at times, and we only return to the same page turning intensity at around 173 into the book, but then it is even better than the first book.
I know I am longing to read the next in this series!

I liked this book more than the first book. I felt like the first book I mostly spent confused about the world-building. I still feel like I'm a bit confused in certain areas but it was a definite improvement from the first.

The whole thing could have used another 100 pages. Still, it was fun.
