I really really don't like Ripley so I'm going to leave this as 2 stars just for her attitude.

As the Sheriff's Deputy Ripley is used to doling out justice and protecting people. She likes to date when it suits her fancy, and she does not want anything to do with the powers that link her to her former friend Mia and her sister-in-law Nell. When researcher Mac Booke arrives on the island she's determined to have nothing to do with him, but fate seems to have other plans that have nothing to do with what she wants . . .

Having just read the previous book [b:Dance Upon the Air|685379|Dance Upon the Air (Three Sisters Island trilogy #1)|Nora Roberts|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1214282191s/685379.jpg|58217] of course I felt compelled to read this one too. Roberts departs slightly from her usual formula by having two of her female protagonists at odds throughout the first two books. Usually the females are the best of friends even while they struggle with their feelings about the men in their lives. Otherwise it's just as sexy and slightly suspenseful as its predecessor.

Ripley’s story is very different but you should read Dance Upon the Air first. She doesn’t want anything to do with being a witch, but fights for those she loves no matter what, including using her gifts as a witch. Ripley is abrasive but I like her.

A GI Jane falls in love with Indiana Jones. The big bad comes to kill them and, you know, they win.

There are spoilers ahead for Dance Upon the Air. Deputy Ripley Todd can pretend as hard as she wants that she’s just an ordinary woman, but after calling on the magic she’d denied for years to protect Nell, she’s having trouble forcing it back down again. It’s not helped by the appearance of a nosy paranormal researcher, MacAllister Booke, who’s interested in her gift and a bit more than that. There’s an undeniable spark between them, but falling for him means risking her heart and her tenuous control over her magic– and she’ll need both if she’s going to break the curse of violence and revenge started three hundred years ago. Trigger warnings: death (mention), animal death (mention), assault/violence, mental illness.

Anyone who loved the first book is going to find plenty to enjoy about this one, since it has all the same basic elements: good characters, strong sense of place, interesting by not overly elaborate witchy world-building, steamy romance. Basically, I think it’s going to come down to preferences on the characters as far as favorite books in the trilogy go. Unfortunately, I don’t like Ripley as much as I like Mia or Nell, so I spent most of this book shuffling my feet waiting to get to the next one. Her brand of physical toughness masking fear makes her kind of a bully at times, and it pales in comparison to the real strength of the other two.

I did very much enjoy Booke as a love interest though, far more than I enjoyed the bland heroism of Sheriff Todd. He’s a really fun combination of brilliant researcher and hopeless idiot, and his steady temper provides a nice counter to Ripley’s explosiveness. There’s a nice little twist in there I wasn’t expecting. The relationship is well-developed, but it’s slow-moving as far as overall plot. While we knew immediately in the first book that Remington was eventually going to come for Nell, I was more than halfway through this book before I had even the vaguest idea of what the real threat was. It’s not quite as compelling, the character development pretty sudden after Ripley dragging her feet for most of the book, but the ending is satisfying.
