This one just goes a little beyond what I was hoping to read. I’m sure it’s a great dark romance, but I was okay with the level of books 1 and 2, this one seems more intense and I’m a delicate flower.

“Jesus, f**k… I’d die for you, you know that?”

2.5 rounded up. Dex and Hammer have the “healthiest” relationship I’ve ever seen in a K.A. Merikan book. To the point were I found it a little boring. The story was still unique and fun, loved them as a couple. But Hammer had some of the longest inner monologue and during conversations I would forget what was going on because it would go on and on.

I have mixed opinions on this one, hence the three star rating. I definitely recommend looking at the TWs for this book so you know what you're getting into. This is a captor/captive romance where the captor, Hammer, is the executioner for a gang and the captive, Dex, is too stupid to realize how much danger he is in. It made for a fun dynamic and I've always loved characters who are canonically dumbasses and Dex was no exception. He is the definition of a lovable idiot. If I had rated this on entertainment value alone, I would have given it another star, but there are some things in here that I thought were handled distastefully and prevented me from rating it higher. I'm going to get into spoilers to explain myself, so heads up on that.

SpoilerThe first thing that made me side-eye the authors was an offhanded comment that Hammer made about consent. For context, Hammer has a girl he hooks up with and, while they are having sex, he chokes her without her permission. Later, she brings this up and says she is upset at him for not asking consent to choke her. In this scene, she’s made to seem like she is being ridiculous and dramatic about the whole situation. Hammer says if he wanted her to stop, she should’ve brought it up in the moment. Since we are in Hammer's head, and this is all fictional, we know he truly meant her no disrespect and would have stopped if she had asked. It's also implied that she liked it in the moment and is only starting an argument with him to argue with him and not that she's legitimately upset over being choked without permission. To me, the scene felt dismissive of real life woman's experiences who have found themselves in similar situations, but weren't into it and were too scared or caught off guard to say something in the moment and with men who didn’t respect them enough to ask beforehand. The whole scene just felt odd to me.

SpoilerThe other thing that I thought was handled strangely, was the subplot with Ryker and Hammer discovering him with cp. I think starting off a romance book, regardless of how dark you want it to be, with someone getting caught watching cp is a horrible choice in my opinion. It sets up a nasty tone and took me a minute to finally move past. But that I could possibly look past, since this is a dark book, but it was the way that Hammer handled finding Ryker like that that I really didn't like. His first thought is to keep this information to himself and use it as leverage against Ryker instead of like... I dunno... telling someone about or just killing him right then and there on the spot since he could have done real harm to a child. Hammer is supposed to love murdering, right? So you give me a character like that and have him confront a pedophile and his first instinct isn't to fuck him up right then and there? And I'm supposed to be rooting for this guy? Instead he decides this must be a "one-off" deal and wants to give Ryker a chance to redeem himself. Huh? I thought Dex was the dumb one in the relationship??? Anyways, I wish that whole plot line had been written with more sensitivity to it.

To sum up: Dex carried this book on his back and, even though I only liked one of the characters, the two of them together had good chemistry. I had fun reading everything that was not mentioned above and I enjoy this author duo's writing style, but their approach to certain topics leaves much to be desired.

I stopped reading at 80%, but didn't want to list it as DNFed.
I enjoyed what I read.
It's great autistic x ADHD rep.
I just get bored towards the end of some romance books.
