DNF at 50%

Received an Advanced Reader’s Copy from the publisher, Avon, via Edelweiss+ in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!

Loathe at First Sight is the first book that I DNFed since I started blogging. I just never had the heart to DNF a book and I have always wanted to stay until the very end because I believe in giving everything and everyone a chance.

But for the first time I felt, giving this book a chance right now might come at the cost of my own emotional health and I wasn’t ready for that right now. I think the book starts off with a setback because it’s marketed wrong. I walked into this book thinking it was a fluffy, rom-com, enemies-to-lovers office romance. It was not.

Loathe at First Sight should have come with trigger warnings. I DNFed at 50% and everything I’d read includes
Spoiler misogyny, racism, sexism, work place harassment, fat-phobia, cyber bullying and toxicity.
While all of this--where a young woman has to face difficult hurdles and obstacles just because of her race and her gender--are very relevant topics and are important to address and talk about, I wasn’t prepared for it. I hadn’t walked in aware of what I was going to read and I certainly hadn’t expected it to be written in a way that was bothering me so much I hadn’t realised I was not doing okay until I texted a friend and ranted about something that happened to me in the past with so much angst. It came out of absolutely no where and I realised that the toxic environment in the book was bringing back some difficult memories.

Walk into this book with awareness and while being in the right mind space for it and you’d probably enjoy it a lot more than me.

Stay safe and happy reading to all of you. <3

Faces racism, sexism and misogyny in the workplace head-on in the context of a new female employee in a gaming company.
The writing is a little wooden but a few good things happen including recognition that the head of the company sets the tone & the employees will rise or fall to the expectations.

I loved this book! The main character was so likable and the whole concept was interesting and relevant. I wanted to stretch out reading it another day since my next book hasn't arrived yet, but I couldn't put it down.

DNF at page 124 (April 2022)

I had picked this up thinking this would be a cute romance but it most definitely isn’t a romance.

This is a story about a POC woman facing casual sexism at the workplace. Yeah not what I was looking for so I’ve decided to DNF this.

I won’t be rating the book as I didn’t get very far into it. I will say that some of the scenes until where I read, were depressingly familiar and a little too on the nose for me.

I think the marketing of this book and the blurb are super misleading which is a shame. I feel that the publishing company decided to capitalize on romance readers even though the author is doing something very different

I hope the book resonates with other readers because I don’t think it was bad.

Just not a Romance book imo

2.5 stars. It started out fine, but it just kind of went off the rails and never found itself again.

The premise was intriguing but there was a bit too much unrealistic storytelling for me to wade through. And overall I just found the MC unlikeable and chaotic. A disappointment, because i enjoyed her other book thoroughly - but this one was just not for me.
