‘When we started, the crowd round the inn door, which had by this time swelled to a considerable size, all made the sign of the cross and pointed two fingers towards me’

‘Once more I have seen the count go out in his lizard fashion’

‘for here at the end, where the romance of my life is told, ere I go back to take up the thread of my life-work, I say sadly and without hope, finis’

‘It was then very dark, and the scattered lamps made the darkness greater even we were once outside their individual radius’

‘The sight was almost too much for me. It seemed to be as much an affront to the dead as it would have been to have stripped off her clothing in her sleep whilst living’

‘No one but a woman can help a man when he is in trouble of the heart’

‘I saw the Count lying within the box upon the earth, some of which the rude falling from the cart had scattered over him. He was deathly pale, just like a waxen image, and the red eyes flared with the horrible vindictive look which I knew too well. As I looked, the eyes saw the sinking sun, and the look of hate in them turned to triumph’

‘It was like a miracle; but before our very eyes, and almost in the drawing of a breath, the whole body crumpled into dust and passed from our sight’

‘Seven years ago we all went through the flames; and the happiness of some of us since then is, we think, well worth the pain we endured’

“There are darknesses in life and there are lights, and you are one of the lights, the light of all lights.”

¡Fenomenal!

“I am longing to be with you, and by the sea, where we can talk together freely and build our castles in the air.”

I still really loved this, but I have a few thoughts:

1. Mina Murray is smarter than all of the men in this book combined. They would never have made it without her and her "man brain" (ugh) to guide them through.

2. Quincey Morris deserved better.

3. I didn't notice it the first time I read this book, but Van Helsing talks SO much. Like, to the point that about half way through, my eyes glazed over whenever he appeared on the page. It took conscious effort to focus on his dialogue.

But all that aside, I still adore this classic of horror and the atmosphere it builds.

Put it down for too long,  and am not in the mood for horror atm,  even mild old timey horror.
