I enjoyed reading this book. The characters were good, the worldbuilding is amazing, and the plot was superb. The writing style wasn't my favorite.

I really loved Rowan and Aelin’s relationship and felt it was a nice change of pace compared to her past relationships in the books so far.

Spoiler I’m sooooo irritated that Soracha died, Aedion and Dorian have been captured, and yet Chaol gets to leave to find her???? Chaol sucks, like he is actively the person I care least about and now he’s in charge of saving them????? Can’t wait to see how that goes bc it’s giving redemption arc.

The fact that I rated this 3/5 stars the first time I read it is absolutely criminal! My apologies to Sarah J. Maas because this book is actually incredibly well written. The story telling is so much more developed and the balance between the action needed to move an epic fantasy forward and the emotional exploration that adds depth to each character is spot on. I still maintain that the witches’s storyline is a bit boring and seemingly out of place. However, knowing that their role becomes crucial in later books helped me be more invested in their part this time around.

This was a difficult book to rate, because although I loved Celaena's plot, and I found the other plots interesting, I hated flicking between the three stories. Particularly when there was only one instance where two of the stories intertwined, albeit in such a minor way. This made me throw down the book multiple times when I just didn't want to read about the others at the moment.

Additionally, I felt the change in Rowan's character was ridiculously insincere. I couldn't reconcile that broody war hero with, for want of a better phrase, the eager-to-please puppy he was at the end.

I feel like so many people told me they thought that this book felt slower than the first two and harder to get through, but I actually really enjoyed it. I loved the new characters added and how the story unfolded.

I feel so late to the game, so  I already know so many of the new additions by name only. And while I could easily pick them out when they showed up, even before introductions, I knew very little beyond that and so still enjoyed learning more and more about each of them in turn. I wasn’t expecting this to be a multiple POV book - for whatever reason - but I adjusted quickly and found myself looking forward to certain characters in particular.

Per usual with the Maas books, the audiobook narrator was phenomenal. 🎧
