Some useful insights, and like 'Aroha' a good coffee table book.

I could be the wrong audience but I thought the book was too self-help-y and... opinion based? I appreciate Elder is a clinical psychologist, but some of the "lessons from our tīpuna" seemed to be her interpretations of things, not too much was rooted in the opinions of Tohunga or other Mātauranga Māori practitioners. Also there is no one Māramataka. Every iwi has/had slight variations, and that nuance was not sufficiently caveated. Some more corroboration from other experts, or at least a disclaimer that this was only one person's interpretation of this would have been better.

It is a learning aid to reflect on one's dreams and one's past in order to improve for the future, via the moon's cycle. You have to be in the right headspace for this book, or just learn about the moon cycles.

Could listen to Dr Elder all day, she speaks Maori beautifully and has written something very personal so that we may learn and grow from her insights. Would recommend listening in conjunction with reading.

As someone with 0% Maori ancestry, this book was not written for me. I would say this book was written with the intention of only Maori people reading it. That said, I found this to be a fascinating read.

This book was written to be a culturally-based Moari Self-Help book to help people recover from the isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic.
