Smarty-pants girl has life changing experiences at a summer college program. Yes, please. The plot was a little all over the place, but otherwise an earnest, enjoyable bit of realism.

I'm torn.

There are SO MANY PARTS THAT ARE WONDERFUL and I REALLY WANT TO LOVE IT BEYOND ALL REASON but it just didn't quite click for me so after see-sawing back and forth for a while I'm sticking it in the neutral "liked it" zone with three stars.

I don't know. I think the biggest thing was that the main character got on my nerves, and I wasn't a big fan of the love interest either. But the thing is, even though I didn't always /like/ Gloria that much, I had to admit that I related to her in a lot of ways. And she had her moments. The side characters, particularly Calvin and Chloe, were very likeable. There were a lot of neat themes (maybe too many?), and the writing was lovely, and the thing is, even though it isn't my new favorite book in the world, it really did make me think about things. So I do like it, if only for that.

So... Disappointed that it wasn't as wonderful as I hoped? Grateful that it wasn't nearly all bad? I don't know man apparently I'm not good at forming opinions let's just say however I feel about it I'm glad that I read it.

Sarah is a talented writer- her prose is lovely! Her characters are fleshed out and really interesting. While the story itself is quieter than most contemporaries or YA books, I really liked how slice-of-life it felt. It didn't drag at all and I finished easily and with a smile after one sitting. :)

There is a lot I really liked about this book, but I do wish Combs had fleshed out the plot line involving the Kentucky mountain removal more. And I must admit the character of Mason never grew on me. Still it's great to see young adult characters who question the role technology is playing in their life and express a real love of books and literature.

I'm a sucker for diners and camp - so this book was kind of like finding a small slice of high school while reshelving books at work. This book was nothing like I expected it to be but in the best way possible. I was expecting your stereotypical formula of Girl goes to Camp. Girl meets Boy. Summer Camp Romance that melts with the changing leaves of the Fall. That's not what this book was about and I think it made me love it even more. I loved the characters - especially Calvin (I would jump on the Calvin bandwagon in a hot second). The whole experience that Gloria and her friends travel through is true and honest - those days that change everything, those friends who only spend a summer with but change your life, that one professor who spins your world on a different axis for a few weeks. But I loved that Gloria was wrong and she learned from it. Not in a whole earth shattering way but the way it happens when you spend that one summer at camp and grow up. And I loved the ending. It was a little corny the way it happened but what it said was real. I hate cookie cutter endings. I hate endings that go "happily ever after" and then nothing more. But this book ended just the right way, everything wrapped up, but not set, not storybook perfect, but enough.
