Incredible writing... from a man who led an interesting life. Harlem Renaissance classic right here.

One of those books that can be classified as nothing other than beautiful. Difficult, slow, definitely not a light read, but beautiful.

An important yet tedious book

This is a seminal work but not a well written or interesting one, at least not to me. It is more poetry --and not very good poetry -- than prose. And the work is disconnected and cobbled together too. Much of this edition is not in fact the short compilation of Toomer work that is Cane, but a literary deconstruction of Toomer life and racial identity.

I feel like this was really well written, but I just did not understand it at all. I read it way too fast to just finish it, and if I had taken my time, it would have made more sense. But I was really put off by a very overt hostility towards women, so I didn't feel like diving in deep. I also admit that I really don't get poetry. Also couldn't find any help online (Cliffs Notes, SparkNotes, etc.).

Even though I didn't personally enjoy "Cane" that much, I can understand why it's counted among the classics. This book meanders. It pauses to think. Sometimes it seems to rush by too fast to understand. At once both simple and complex, this experimental writing style can be both gut-wrenching and somewhat inaccessible at times. It certainly has its moments of beauty and moments of horror.

I appreciate what the writer does in this book. However, it's not my style. This book is to a conventional novel the way jazz is to conventional rock and roll. I also think that comparison is exactly what the author was aiming for.
