I’ve always wanted to read this and I’m so glad I did. Such a thrilling, frightening story, Stephen King is the master storyteller 🔥

There's always something about Halloween/October that makes me want to pick up a Stephen King. We also had a 50 Years of Stephen King display at work, so I figured I'd better brush up on his work to get myself in the right headspace for designing the display. For this year's pick, I decided to revisit a previous read via audiobook. I figured Carrie would be a great pick with its fragmented storytelling devices from books to new reports to various POVs of different characters. We have notes of power, religion, trauma, high school torment, etc. all brewing to create the perfect environment for what occurred in this little town. King does an excellent job at clearly defining his characters so that each is easily discernable even with just a small amount of seeing them on the page. I heard this book was getting adapted into a tv series and it'll be interesting to see if it will stay more true to this book's format or if it will follow the movies' routes. It's wild to think that this book is the one that started Stephen King's career! Here's to 50 Years of King.

𝓒𝓪𝓻𝓻𝓲𝓮
By: Stephen King
Thriller

𝒪𝓋𝑒𝓇𝒶𝓁𝓁: 3.5/5

𝑅𝑒𝓋𝒾𝑒𝓌:  This is the first Stephen King book I have read, I have a whole bunch on my shelf so that will soon rectify itself though. I have, however, seen several of the movies based on his books, including Carrie. The book, in my opinion, was better than the movie, as is the standard for book to movie adaptions. There is just more emotion when reading than can come though on a screen, especially for a book like this.

𝒯𝓇𝒾𝑔𝑔𝑒𝓇 𝒲𝒶𝓇𝓃𝒾𝓃𝑔𝓈:  Bullying, death; blood; child abuse; emotional abuse; murder; violence; gore; religious bigotry; fire/fire injury; physical abuse; body shaming; domestice abuse; toxic relationships; child death; sexual assault; gaslighting; car accident; injury detail; grief

its okay, i guess? i will give the movie a slight edge because i think de palma directing style really enhanced my experience on the film, and the ending is significantly more powerful than the book. the book do has a part that i liked better where carrie is not your usual petite pretty girl but instead a girl that has conventionally unattractive characteristic, which makes the bullying part more moving as body shaming is something very underpresented in media and often played as a joke.

i feel like the writing style could be a little better though. some of the parts describing the female characters felt male gazey. this is also a problem in the movie, the opening scene is... yuck to say the least.

i also dont like the attempt to replicate accents, it makes the writing more weirder and clunkier to read, instead of feeling more authentic.
