I enjoyed this book- it’s whimsical and beautiful. such an interesting portrayal of the west that i’ve never seen before. it did drag at times and sometimes because there were lots of characters it was hard to identify all of them. very unique story and i really loved Ada/Doc the protagonist.

This has been one of my favorite reads so far this year. A weird alternate west where infants are worshipped and the end all be all of society sets up the story of a midwifes daughter and her adventure with a gang of outlaws. It was a super cool twist on classic tropes and ada was a genuinely lovable protagonist. The supporting cast has stand outs and a few characters that blend together but still a really engaging ensemble. It was light and exciting but also balanced characters dealing with mental illnesses isolation persecution inequality and traumas. Really good and an easy rec for anyone looking for a new western

i wanted gay cowboys and feminism and somehow i got that but as if it was by a cishet woman who once walked into a lesbian bar and cried when someone hit on her

I loved the concept of a feminist Western! This book was definitely unlike anything else I’ve read. It covered a lot about gender norms and sexuality in a predominantly male-focused genre.

This was very much character driven rather than plot driven, so it felt a little slow at times. It was a quick and enjoyable read, but the story wasn’t really for me

Outlawed by Anna North was such a unique read! I mean, y'all, it's a feminist spin on a western! Admittedly, I don't read a lot of westerns, AND I really dug this one! The Hole in the Wall Gang is a group of women who have been fled and/or been shunned by their communities. For some of these women, it's because they can't bear children which is an expectation of them as wives and/or allegations of witchcraft. The story focuses on Ada who finds her way to this gang led by The Kid, and the story is then told from her point of view. With her story, Ada explores the dynamics of the gang and the stories she's able to learn about some of its members. It's sad to hear how they've had to leave their homes, and it's also about how they were able to find a community. With this gang, there is a risky plan that develops to gain some power, and it creates some divisions. Again, this was such a different way to experience the west, and it also had the added dynamics of identity and relationships to add more layer and depth to the story being told. Thanks to NetGalley for the early look at this January 2021 release!

It was a fine read, had a lot of potential but found it fell short in the end.
