A well-written cautionary tale about a man and his dog and their struggle to survive in the extreme environment of the far north.

Beginning with a description of the man's ego and ignorance, the book set up a domino line. Moving along the narrative, the pieces start to connect, guiding the story towards its inevitable conclusion. To my surprise, the book's tone maintained a surprising tranquility, which, in turn, infused the atmosphere with a poignant quality. This changes the atmosphere to have this sentimental effect which makes you feel a bit more sympathy for the protagonist. Overall, it was certainly an interesting read and quite a memorable one.

He did not belong with himself any more. Even then he was outside of himself, standing with the boys and looking at himself in the snow. It certainly was cold, was his thought.

A short story which portrays the horrors of mother nature, showcasing that sometimes the natural wonders of the world can be scarier than monsters under your bed.
