I'm not exactly sure how to feel about this play. From the premise, it sounded interesting, but as I started reading, I became more and more disappointed. The first act was slow and a bit boring. It failed to attract my interest which resulted to then not being very engaged with the other two. The first act should captivate audiences and hook them in. This play failed to do that. I understand why it mattered, theme wise but I still did not enjoy it much. In general I found all the three acts very disconnected from each other and there was no real development of characters. Everything was rushed and we only got small glimpsed of their lives. The play reminded me of the musical What/If? which made me dislike it even more. Why do women always have to choose between motherhood or a successful professional career?

Olen lukenut muutaman Caryl Churchillin näytelmän. Valitettavasti en ole yhtäkään nähnyt livenä. Hänen tekstinsä vaikuttavat usein tuovan esiin taitekohtia, solmukohtia, sokeita pisteitä yhteiskunnissa ja etenkin ihmisten välisissä suhteissa. Ei sinänsä yllättävää näytelmäformaatille, mutta Churchillillä tämä on erityisen vahvaa sen lisäksi että näitä solmuja tai sokeita pisteitä ei ratkaista näytelmän sisällä vaan ne jätetään lukijalle/katsojalle pohdittavaksi. Konfliktit kuljettavat Churchillin tekstejä ja henkilöhahmot ovat usein virkistävän kompleksisia ja/tai monitulkintaisia ja yllätyksellisiä. — Top Girls julkaistiin ensimmäisen kerran vuonna 1982. Siinä on kolme näytöstä. Ensimmäisessä on joukko historiallisia (unohdettuja) naisia, jotka keskustelevat illallisella elämästään. Toisessa ja kolmannessa näytöksessä eletään näytelmän kirjoittamisajankohdan (1980-luvun alku) aikoihin: kaksi sisarusta, kaksi erilaista elämää. Toinen heistä on jäänyt kotiseudulle ja toinen ei luoden nousujohteista uraa. Ja sitten on yksi angstinen teinitytär. — Churchill tuntuu kirjoittavan näytelmiä, joista jää epämukava olo (kuten Cloud 9). Henkilöhahmoihin haluaa mieltyä tai jopa samaistua, mutta sitten heistä paljastuu jotakin epämiellyttävää. Pidän tästä kompleksisuudesta. Puolia riitojen tai konfliktien välillä ei ole helppo valita. Näytelmä tuo esille naisten erilaisia rooleja ja esittää mahdollisuuksia ja esteitä tasa-arvoon sukupuolten välillä. Top Girls avautui minulle pohdintojen verkostona, joka etäältä katsottuna on hyvin kompleksinen ja luultavasti myös ratkaisematon.

Big fan of the historical cameos in the first scene. Interesting to read this decades after Thatcher to see how, even at the time, her brand of feminism was polarizing. Also quite a nice change to read a play by a woman with a full female cast (especially after suffering through the misogynistic disaster that is Plautus).
