Kuang centers it on a specific class going through the British translation institute, mostly through the eyes of Robin, a boy brought to England from China by one of the professors of Babel. Robin's experience of England going through a magical version of the industrial evolution is a way to show the reader the realities of that time and our own. How colonial expansion and exploitation were used to build wealth and power for those who already have it, how "progress" was measured by production and wealth rather than the well-being of the people not in power, and how resistance could be met with indifference by those in power.
There were so many elements and moments of this book that reflect clearly into the realities we see today. There is a lot of discussion of colonialism, imperialism, racism, and suppression. Our own refusal to acknowledge the wrongness of how our modern world was built, harming so many so that a small few can "thrive". If we do not learn and grow and seek to change, to support those who suffer concretely, what kind of world are we perpetuating?

I loved this book from the very first page: you can see how much the author cares about the subject, and the way she manages to reconcile and express her love for the academic setting with an honest, raw and unfiltered critic about colonialism is masterful. As in tpw, Kuang addresses these issues in an extremely deep way, without neglecting the most brutal details.
I really liked the characters, even if sometimes I’ve found the co-protagonists a bit flat. Robin, on the other hand, is characterized beautifully. His motivations are clear and evolve naturally during the course of the story, and its inner change is as inevitable as necessary.
I especially loved the second half of the book, mainly because I think that the first half has some pacing issues. Probably the only narrative choice I didn’t appreciate was the way the author used footnotes: they contained very interesting information, but in my opinion they were far too fundamental for the complete understanding of the story, and they compromised the flow of the story.

As an adult fantasty reader I was intrigued by the premise when reccomended this book by multiple friends. However it seems to be an interesting heartbreaking revolution tale wrapped up in magic school wrapping paper. Perhaps better for middle school or high school readers? For fans who have graduated from Harry Potter? I was also a bit disappointed by the lack of intersectionalism, when both racism and sexism are given their space.jelliestars's review

It is not without flaws. At times the handling of its themes is very heavy-ended, everything is spelled out for the reader and you can see the author's hand very cleary, so much so that you feel a bit pulled out of the narrative. The portrayal of some characters could use some more depth and exploration, in places it felt a little surface-level and stilted.
The ending is maybe a bit too open-ended for my liking.
That being said, the book is still a marvellous feat of the dark academia genre. I loved the reading experience, it was fascinating and gripping, it kept me on the edge of my seat with its twists and turns and put me on a roller coaster of emotions. Just, why did you have to crush my heart like that, R. F. Kuang? My poor boys.
Language was just difference. A thousand different ways of seeing, of moving through the world. No; a thousand worlds within one. And translation - a necessary endeavour, however futile, to move between them.
