I always like to start off saying that my reviews are soley based on my enjoyment while reading the book. A good plot line and great characters are just a major bonus.

Let me start off by saying that I had no intention of picking this book up yesterday but I did and here we are. I read this book in less than 24 hours, that is how addicting I found it to be.

In the beginning Colleen advises that she knows this book is not for everyone and that she wrote it just kind of for herself until fans wanted to read it. I am so glad she loves her fans so much that she published this book for us. It was so different from any other Colleen Hoover book I have read.

The characters were absolutely insane, I am looking at you Asa Jackson, but they were also relatable in certain ways. Sloan was just a young girl who fell in love with an absolute manipulative, toxic, delulu boy (we've all been there) 😪 and feels trapped with no way out. Asa constantly threatens to kill her if she tries to leave him but Sloan can't leave because she needs Asa to keep paying for her autistic brother's medical care since her parents are addicts and can't take care of him or afford his care.

Enter Carter....Luke, the knight in shining armor. Right away, Luke/Carter was a dreamboat, he was funny, charismatic, witty, and obviously attractive. Carter/Luke is an undercover cop, who gets hired by Asa and he is trying to take down Asa's drug dealing ring, only to fall in love with Sloan in the process.

I really liked the storyline for this book and for the most part the story moves pretty fast, and it kept my interest the entire time. I am not going to lie, I was super paranoid and anxious when her and Luke would be sneaking around, while Asa was like a few feet away and I was scared he was going to come out of nowhere (the car scene).

Asa was just absolutely ✨UNHINGED✨. That boy was crazy, and I mean CRAZY. He has the most warped sense of relationships and thinks it's okay for men to cheat because it's their "nature" but women don't have that same nature so when they cheat, they're whores and deserve to die. I know he had a rough childhood, but my boy was just DELULU all around. Especially at the end, homeboy was losing it. WHEW.

This book was really good in my opinion, and I haven't stopped thinking about it since I finished it this morning.

Colleen always makes the best stories. This book hit home for me with the situation I am currently going through but it was good to see it all work out in the end. I enjoyed this book very much and read in a few days.

3/5
Too Late is up to now my least favorite book of Colleen Hoover. However, it still deserves a 3/5. The concept was good, but I found the characters of Sloan and Luck superficial, without personality and incoherent.

First, maybe I started this book expecting it to be exceptional because it’s from a popular author. A story described as a Dark Romance in witch a forbidden love grows for sure got my attention. But it lost it fast. Indeed, I had a hard time finishing this reading with his two epilogue and his prologue out at the end. The book was really long, predictable and without deep meaning.

Next, let’s talk about Sloan. At first, she was described as a badass woman that survives in the shitty world she lives in. It ain’t really what she is. Sloan is a whiny baby that accepts her fatality without fighting. It’s boring to only see her cry and beg. If the author was trying to create a strong female character, she really failed. Another question, where are the social service in this country? With such an irresponsible mother, the kids should have been taken away from her.

Moreover, the characters don’t have any profundity. We never hear about Luck’s inquiry, Asa’s drug trafic or what classes Sloan goes to (despite Spanish). The story is only about the love affair between Sloan and Luck. The most developed character isn’t one of the two protagonists, it’s Asa. He’s the only one who shares with us some moments of this past, moments with his parents. It’s the only one that his back story is coherent with his today’s personality. Yes, it’s more realistic that someone with child abuses becomes a possessive and violent psychopath. Sloan, on the other hand, what the fuck! She is victime of sexual assault many times a day, but the first thing she does when she has the chance is to go fuck another guy. I have no such experience, but aren’t you supposed to be traumatized? Also, I find her stupid. Simply stupid. If she really loved her brother like she said so, she would have fought for him to keep his pension (that and the FBI thing were brillant strategy from Asa by the way). One phone call isn’t what I call fighting. I would have tried every legal thing possible to help my brother before turning towards my ex boyfriend doing a drug traffic. And Luck, can someone tell me why this guy became police officer? Nobody knows! It’s illogic, he doesn’t like his job and moreover he’s bad at it! The only thing he was doing in his was flirting with Sloan.

Furthermore, I would have prefer a slow burn between Solan and Luck. Their instant love destroy all the beauty of their love story. “Love story” is already a big word considering that Luck is only a lifebelt for Sloan and that Luck is obsessed with Sloan almost in the same way than Asa. If it ain’t obsession, then it’s pity. And their first sex scene was awful. Awful! We had more description about Asa getting a blow job than Sloan and Luck having their first sexual relation.

Finally, I can understand that Sloan has empathy for Asa, but there is way too much emphasis on that. It’s as if she likes being abused and “raped”. I wouldn’t enjoy living in that house and she almost does. Considering what she dealt with, it would only be logical for Sloan to hate Asa.

In conclusion, I do not regret reading Too Late, but I do not recommend it. Sloan and Luck are weak and stupid and their relation isn’t well developed. However, I loved Asa, because his actions are considered and logical with his story line.

Quick read/listen. A lot of dark/graphic/triggering events. I like stories told from multiple perspectives, such as this.
