Enjoyable read. It definitely got me thinking about the importance of admitting failure, allowing it to be publicly analyzed, and incorporating the lessons learned in educational materials for the next generation. At this point, the book does feel a bit dated -- had I read it in the 1980s, I probably would have given it four stars instead of three.

While it contains valuable lessons, the book tends to be repetitive, slow, and lacking in profoundness. It is not a work of genius, but it it is often the obvious things that are overlooked, and so Petroski at the very least gives a valuable reminder.

Although the arguments and technology discussed are very dated at this point, the underlying principles and philosophy still feel very relative. If anything this text has value for its historical lessons on the importance of analyzing failure as a means of learning.
