read for uni | started off GREAT, however the last two acts felt like they were written by a completely different person?? wasn't a huge fan, unfortunately.

Really great play filled with stark tragedy and lifted by strange comedies, The Winter's Tale has easily become one of my favourite Shakespeare plays after only one reading. Some really juicy lines for the actors, mythic references abound, and fully-fleshed characters to both root for and disdain - A splendid time is guaranteed for all.

No plot, just chaotic character work. I really like the reading that , that really helped with my perspective on the play. Highly recommend watching the Royal Shakespeare Company’s new production, I think without watching it I’d be so confused as to what happened.

So many issues in this play would be solved if literally one conversation had taken place, but then we wouldn't have gotten the iconic "Exit, pursued by a bear" stage direction so I can't say I'm upset about that

By finishing "The Winter's Tale" I finished my personal bard-a-thon to read all of Shakespeare's plays aloud. It took me two years and two weeks to finish my challenge - an epic quest as my friend Patty termed it. And it was well worth the commitment.
I did not, however, enjoy Winter's Tale nearly as much as some other plays. It seems sort of like Othello light but with no proper antagonist like Iago to justify the plot. I wasn't enamored with the language and only really found my way into the story at the beginning of Act V. While not a favorite play, I am glad that I included it in my read.

I had been introduced to The Winter's Tale with people labeling it as a masterwork of mixed moods, emotions, and even genres. I'd say that holds up after reading it. I loved how tragedy and comedy are intermingling in this, and it all comes together surprisingly well, with its ambiguous ending one of the best in Shakespeare's oeuvre.
