I really enjoyed this high fantasy! It does a decent amount of trope-flipping in terms of other modern epic fantasies, and I found myself invested in several of the characters. Absolutely thrilled to read the next book and find out what happens!

This books ending definitely saves it! For the first 2/3 I was just coasting along, not really attached to any of the characters or the storyline. But then the twists started coming, and the ending... ooh wow it saves it. The ending is a 5 star, and the rest of it is a 3 star, so it gets 4 stars! I really cannot wait for the next one - though I was hoping that this was a stand-alone for the majority of the book

This was a fun, fast paced action and adventure story, full of a cast great characters, fiver unique paths that converge to make this great tale. Such great writing, wonderful world building with strong women, modern men, great representation, completely equal and refreshing. I was hooked from the start and did want to put it down. A thoroughly and highly recommended read.

-this is such a good bk??? esp for a debut
-i love the world building so much
-it's a bit on the long side but let me tell you what worked which usually never really worked for me when i read other fantasy bks: i like every single povs (i might like one character more than the other but i never dread jumping back into another pov bc they all serve a purpose/are interesting)
-the way all the characters pretty much has their own journey but somehow are all intertwined together/brought together one way or another seamlessly ugh
-this was very much a 'set up' bk for bigger things to come bc here you learn about all the characters along with the world they live in and what's happening in it, plot is there and it's more action pack in the latter third of the bk but everything happening in the beginning was driving the bk towards that direction and i think it's going to play a bigger role in the following bks than this one and i'm very much looking forward to it
-also shoutout to my boys jude and anton <33

Picked up on a whim, and dang am I glad I did. Great world building with nicely scattered exposition and a fun prophecy. An array of characters that you can easily invest with their own motives, personalities, concerns, places in the expansive world. The plot twist isn't a shocker, but just because you can see it coming doesn't make the narrative any less interesting. It's rewarding enough to see how the characters see things play out and how they react to the ever shifting narrative. I'm excited to see how this series continues, and Todd Boyce does a great job narrating the array of characters.
