I didn’t like this one quite as much as the rest of her books. The main character wasn’t as likable to me—she’s doing this incredibly selfless thing for completely selfish reasons! I also didn’t feel like Sarah and Everett really spent enough time with each other. I know they have a history, but they barely talk throughout the book. Overall, I’m not mad I read it, but I wouldn’t read it again.

The book started a bit slow and slightly disjointed. Early pages kept referencing ominous things to come--right in the middle of a normal interaction or storyline--and then some random interactions that seemed wholly pointless would be sprinkled right in the middle.

At around halfway, the book really picked up and turned around so that saved it a few stars for me. This is an early Katherine Center book (2010) so it is also super interesting to see how far her character development and plot structure has come over the years.

I did not appreciate the foretelling aspects of the writing style (casually mentioning what is going to happen in the future in insufficient detail), and I couldn't understand the main character's actions despite the copious repetitive explanations she kept spelling out page after page.
Add to it the fact that the narrative was heading into 9 months of pregnancy with all the hormones, which would likely make the heroine's decisions even more random and unwise, and I was not up for that ride...

This book takes you through a bunch of different themes with sister relationships through job loss and surrogacy, high school angst, romance, hormonal crushes on inappropriate people, loss of a parent, step-parent relationships, marketing careers, saving libraries, and it’s a love story as well. I think only Katherine Center can pull this off and still make it a book I’d read again.

I'm working on being a Katherine Center completist, so I'm going back to the few backlist books of hers I haven't gotten to yet. Reading this book was a stark reminder that she has improved leaps and bounds as an author since her earlier novels. This was cute and I enjoyed it, but it was more on the okay side of good. The story was relatively predictable, but the characters were sweet and I was compelled by the story. I was drawn in and wanted the best for Sarah and her family. I enjoyed this but if you are new to Katherine Center, I highly recommend going straight to her more recent novels.
